Foreword to the Collected Works of Robert Hofstadter Robert Herman
University of Texas "... time does not flow on emptily;
it brings, and takes, and leaves behind."
- Wilhelm von Humboldt As I write this Foreword to the collected papers of one of my closest and dearest friends, Robert Hofstadter, my mind is filled with a wide panorama of wonderful recollections coupled with a profound feeling of sadness. Our lives were intertwined over a very long period of time, extending from 1931 until November 1990, during which we were close friends and scientific colleagues. Bob had a deep yearning for knowledge and a constant striving toward creative achievement. Throughout his life, he deeply loved nature - a fact that I learned early on and came to appreciate even more as I saw Bob in later years at his ranch near Flournoy, California. As a youth he collected insects, leaves, and rocks, and developed a great interest in photography, which he pursued much of his life. One of Bob's passions was music, both classical and jazz, which he truly enjoyed over the years. Perhaps above all he was a gentle and modest man with great integrity and a lifelong appreciation of humor and good fun. For many years I encouraged Bob to write about his life and experiences, but he always demurred on the grounds that he couldn't write very well and that he had nothing all that interesting to say. Of course he was wrong on both counts. To compensate in a small way for his not having written any memoirs, I will myself touch on some personal recollections. Indeed, I have often felt that the way we do our work is perhaps more important in a sense than the specific accomplishments themselves.

Robert Hofstadter 5. Februar in New York 17.

Text
The American physicist Robert Hofstadter, b. New York City, Feb. 5, 1915, d. Nov. 17, 1990, was known for his fundamental work in high-energy physics. His experiments yielded the first information on the structure of protons and neutrons, for which he received the 1961 NOBEL PRIZE in physics. Using the linear accelerator at Stanford University, where he taught (1980-85), Hofstadter bombarded atomic nuclei with electrons having energies of 100-600 MeV. He found that protons and neutrons are composed of positively charged cores that are surrounded by a double cloud of positive mesons in the proton and a positive and negative shell in the neutron. Hofstadter's son, Douglas Richard Hofstadter, b. New York City, Feb. 15, 1945, a cognitive scientist and educator, won fame with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Godel, Escher, Bach (1979), an examination of computers, language, music, and the way humans think. A.1 Annotated Bibliography of Print Resources
There are thousands of printed resources on chaos, fractals, and dimension. These are the sources that inspired me to write this book.
  • Barnsley, Michael. Fractals Everywhere . San Diego, CA: Academic Press, 1988.
    If you want to really learn about fractals, this is the textbook I recommend. Easy to read.
  • Devaney, Robert L . "Overview: Dynamics of Simple Maps" Chaos and Fractals: The Mathematics Behind the Computer Graphics
  • Dewdney, A. K . "Mathematical Recreations: Leaping into Lyapunov Space" Scientific American . September 1991: 178-180. [ alternate url
  • Gleick, James. Chaos: Making a New Science . New York: Viking, 1987.
    More of a history lesson than a mathematics lesson. The companion DOS software
  • Harrison, Jenny. "An Introduction to Fractals" Chaos and Fractals: The Mathematics Behind the Computer Graphics
    A technical and readable introduction to fractals. The author mentions a study done by Tricot on "12 definitions of dimension".
    • Tricot, C. "Douze definitions de la densité logarithmique."

    I'll get back to you later. For now I'll just satisfy with this. It shows how real scientists feel about creationism: "To the California State Board of Education
    We are appalled that you are considering a requirement that science textbooks include creation along with evolution as an explanation of the origin of life. Creation 'theory' is NOT based on science and does NOT belong in a science textbook.
    We urge you to support the recommendation of your own State Advisory Committee on Science Education in rejecting this unreasonable requirement for our science textbooks. Respectfully yours," Signed by the 19 Nobel Laureates who at the time (1972) lived in California: Luis W. Alvares, Carl David Anderson, Felix Bloch, Melvin Calvin, Max Delbrück, Richard P.
