Chemist and Writer: An Interview with Roald Hoffmann
"I love seeing connections," says chemist, poet and Nobel laureate Roald Hoffmann of Cornell University. "I can teach chemists the language of solid-state physics, and maybe teach physicists the inherent value of chemical bonding concepts." Roald Hoffmann is also a literate chemist, as we can see from his recent book Chemistry Imagined: Reflections on Science. This is a joint publication with the artist Vivian Torrence, and combines essays, poems, and articles with a series of collages inspired by chemistry. Torrence has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where Hoffmann is Professor of Physical Science, and her work has been exhibited in art galleries across the United States. Hoffmann's literary achievement shows that chemistry can be a worthwhile, if unexpected, subject for poetry and prose. Hoffmann was born in eastern Poland in 1937, just before that part of his native country was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1939. In 1941 it was overrun by the Nazis, and although he was of Jewish parents, Hoffmann survived the Second World War. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1949, settled in New York, and went to Stuyvesant High School. From there he went to Columbia College and graduated in 1958. His next stop was Harvard, where he was awarded an M.A. in physics in 1960 and a Ph.D. in chemical physics in 1962, working under the supervision of Martin Gouterman and William Lipscomb. His research involved applying the theory of molecular orbitals to polyhedral collections of atoms.

"Applied theoretical chemistry" is the way Roald Hoffmann likes to characterize the particular blend of computations stimulated by experiment and the construction of generalized models, of frameworks for understanding, that is his contribution to chemistry. In more than 450 scientific articles he has taught the chemical community new and useful ways to look at the geometry and reactivity of molecules, from organic through inorganic to infinitely extended structures. Dr. Hoffman has recently participated in the production of a television course in introductory chemistry, "The World of Chemistry."

This is simply the funniest and most enjoyable book on theoretical inorganic chemistry I've ever read. Its format is close to your typical bedside table novel, lively informal and packed with the most awesome qualitative insights on bonding with molecular orbital theory without the need to resort to hardcore mathematics. It also has some amusing puns and jokes mixed with the enthusiasm of conveying this knowledge. The more interested reader should also read Jeremy Burdett's "Chemical Bonding... more...

Writer and Nobel Prize-winning chemist Roald Hoffmann to speak at Assembly Series Hoffmann to speak on unity of science and the arts By Mary Kastens Though he is best known as a chemist, Hoffmann is also a published poet. In his talk he will use examples from chemistry, poetry, painting and ceramics to make a case for an underlying unity of science and the arts. He explores the similarities in the creative processes of the two disciplines. There are also differences between the two, but he does not believe that "scientists have some greater insight into the workings of nature than poets." Hoffmann was born in Poland in 1937. His father was killed by the Nazis, but he and his mother and a few relatives survived. He came to the United States in 1949. He graduated from Columbia College in 1958 and went on to receive his master's degree in physics in 1960 and his Ph.D. in chemical physics in 1962, both from Harvard. He joined the faculty at Cornell University in 1965 and now holds the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professorship in Humane Letters. Hoffmann's published research is highly influential and is frequently cited by other scientists, but he thinks his major contribution is teaching. He teaches primarily undergraduates.

    by Joachim Schummer
If you expect a nobel prize winner being a crank who can think of nothing but his subject, then read Roald Hoffmann's The Same and Not the Same and test your hypothesis. This book is about chemistry, to be sure - but in the broadest scope including sociology, psychology, ethics and philosophy of chemistry. 51 nice little chapters grouped in ten parts reflect on chemistry from different aspects. Since they neither bore chemists nor deter non-chemists, Hoffmann succeeds in attracting both groups (I will refer to this again). The underlying idea is that chemistry is not only important and influential on our cultural life, it is also interesting in a very special sense, both for chemists and non-chemists. Instead of presenting a series of smart and admirable achievements of modern chemistry (remember the 18th-century (pseudo-)scientific cabinets), Hoffmann discusses inherent tensions of chemistry. Why that? Tensions indicate dynamics, something balanced for the moment between driving forces, something living that attracts our attention, our interest. Miracles and showpieces do also, for sure, but even the laymen gets fed up soon. Tensions, on the other hand, raise our interest more continually. And abstract tensions invite for intellectual discussions to maintain the balance, again and again.
