Van't Hoff, Jacobus Henricus (1852-1911),
Dutch physical chemist. Van't Hoff is considered the father of physical chemistry. As a professor of chemistry he taught first at the University of Amsterdam and later at the Prussian Academy of Science at Berlin. In 1886 he demonstrated a similarity between the behavior of dilute solutions and gases. He also introduced the modern concept of chemical affinity. Van't Hoff was awarded the first Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1901 for his work on rates of reaction, chemical equilibrium, and osmotic pressure.

Van't Hoff, Jacobus Henricus
Dutch physical chemist. He explained the 'asymmetric' carbon atom occurring in optically active compounds. His greatest work - the concept of chemical affinity as the maximum work obtainable from a reaction - was shown with measurements of osmotic and gas pressures, and reversible electrical cells. He was the first recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, in 1901.
Van't Hoff was born in Rotterdam and studied at several universities in Europe. He was professor at Amsterdam 1878-96 and at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin from 1896.
In 1874 van't Hoff postulated that the four valencies of a carbon atom are directed towards the corners of a regular tetrahedron. This allows it to be asymmetric (connected to four different atoms or groups) in certain compounds, and it is these compounds that exhibit optical activity. Van't Hoff ascribed the ability to rotate the plane of polarized light to the asymmetric carbon atom in the molecule, and showed that optical isomers are left- and right-handed forms (mirror images) of the same molecule.
Van't Hoff's first ideas about chemical thermodynamics and affinity were published in 1877, and consolidated in his Etudes de dynamique chimique 1884. He applied thermodynamics to chemical equilibria, developing the principles of chemical kinetics and describing a new method of determining the order of a reaction. He deduced the connection between the equilibrium constant and temperature in the form of an equation known as the van't Hoff isochore.

Hoff, Jacobus Henricus Van't
Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on August 30, 1852. He was the third child in a family of seven children of Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff, a physician, and Alida Jacoba Kolff. In 1869 he entered the Polytechnic School at Delft and obtained his technology diploma in 1871. His decision to follow a purely scientific career, however, came soon afterwards during vacation-work at a sugar factory when he anticipated for himself a dreary profession as a technologist. After having spent a year at Leiden, mainly for mathematics, he went to Bonn to work with A.F. Kekulé from autumn 1872 to spring 1873; this period was followed by another in Paris with A. Wurtz, when he attended a large part of the curriculum for 1873-1874. He returned to Holland in 1874 and obtained his doctor's degree that same year under E. Mulder in Utrecht. In 1876 he became lecturer at the Veterinary College at Utrecht, but left this post for a similar position at the University of Amsterdam the following year. In 1878 came his appointment as Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology at the same university. After having occupied this chair for 18 years he accepted an invitation to go to Berlin as Honorary Professor, connected with a membership of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences. The principal reason for this change was the fact that he was overburdened with obligations to give elementary lectures and to examine large numbers of students, including even those for medical propaedeutics, leaving him with too little time to do his own research work. He was an ardent advocate for the creation of a special class of scientific workers. At his new post he remained till the end of his life. van 't Hoff has acquired fame particularly by his epoch-making publications.

Iconographisch Bureau (b. Aug. 30, 1852, Rotterdam, Neth.d. March 1, 1911, Berlin, Ger.), physical chemist and first winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1901) for work on rates of reaction, chemical equilibrium, and osmotic pressure. After studies in The Netherlands, he worked briefly under August Kekule at Bonn and then in the Paris laboratory of Charles-Adolphe Wurtz, where he met Joseph-Achille Le Bel. In 1874 he and Le Bel, independently of each other, announced a concept that proved to be the cornerstone in the study of the three-dimensional structure (stereochemistry) of organic compounds: the four chemical bonds that carbon can form are directed to the corners of a tetrahedron. This concept helped explain the property of optical rotation. Hoff was professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geology at the University of Amsterdam (1878-96). In 1884 he published ("Studies in Chemical Dynamics"), which contained the principles of chemical kinetics, described a new method for determining the order of a reaction, and applied the laws of thermodynamics to chemical equilibriums. He also introduced the modern concept of chemical affinity. In 1886 he showed a similarity between the behaviour of dilute solutions and gases. Until 1895 he worked on Svante Arrhenius' theory of the dissociation of electrolytes. In 1896 he became professor to the Prussian Academy of Science at Berlin. His studies of the salt deposits at Stassfurt, Ger., contributed to that nation's chemical industry. In 1887 he and the German chemist Wilhelm Ostwald founded the influential

In 1872 Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff (1852–1911), a Dutch graduate student, came to Bonn to study for a year. From August Kekulé von Stradonitz , van't Hoff learned of a possible tetrahedral arrangement of the valence bonds of carbon, proposed by the Russian chemist Alexander Mikhailovich Butlerov in 1862. In 1873, after van't Hoff had moved to Paris to work with Charles Adolphe Wurtz, he realized that the phenomenon of optical activity possessed by some organic molecules—their ability to rotate plane-polarized light—could be explained by the two possible arrangements of four different substituents in the space around a carbon atom. This theory provided substantial indication that the molecular structures the chemists of the time were discussing had a physical reality in three-dimensional space and were not just aids to conceptualizing molecules. (Another graduate student working in Wurtz's laboratory, Joseph Achille Le Bel, independently arrived at the same explanation of optical activity.) Van't Hoff returned to the Netherlands to complete his doctoral degree. He was soon appointed lecturer in theoretical and physical chemistry at the University of Amsterdam, where he stayed for twenty years. There he conducted the studies of reaction rates, chemical equilibrium, chemical affinity, and osmotic pressures that helped found the discipline of physical chemistry. In 1896 he moved to the University of Berlin, and in 1901 he became the first
