Alan Lloyd Hodgkin

Wikipedia
Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin ) was a British physiologist and biophysicist , who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work with Andrew Fielding Huxley on the basis of nerve "action potentials," the electrical impulses that enable the activity of an organism to be coordinated by a central nervous system . Hodgkin and Huxley shared the prize that year with John Carew Eccles , who was cited for research on synapses. Hodgkin and Huxley's findings led the pair to hypothesize ion channels , which were confirmed only decades later. The experimental measurements on which the pair based their action potential theory represent one of the earliest applications of a technique of electrophysiology known as the "voltage clamp". The second critical element of their research was the so-called giant axon of Atlantic squid ( Loligo pealei ), which enabled them to record ionic currents as they would not have been able to do in almost any other neuron , such cells being too small to study by the techniques of the time. The experiments took place at the University of Cambridge beginning in the and continuing into the , after interuption by World War II . The pair published their theory in Confirmation of ion channels came with the development of the patch clamp, which led to a Nobel prize in

Alan Lloyd Hodgkin was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, on February 5th, 1914. His parents were George Hodgkin (who died in Baghdad in 1918) and Mary (Wilson) Hodgkin, now Mrs. Lionel Smith. Alan Lloyd Hodgkin was educated at the Downs School, Malvern (1923-1927), Greshams School, Holt (1927-1932), and Trinity College , Cambridge (1932-1936). His grandfather, Thomas Hodgkin, and uncle, Robin Hodgkin, were historians and to begin with Alan hesitated between history and science. However, he was strongly interested in natural history and that decided him to take up biology and chemistry. After he had become a scholar at Trinity, his future zoology teacher, Carl Pantin, advised him to learn as much mathematics and physics as he could. This was good, if painful, advice which has kept him busy ever since. As an undergraduate he started some rather amateur experiments on frog nerve and continued this line for several years, first as a research scholar and later as a fellow of Trinity. At that period the high table of Trinity included an astonishing array of scientific talent, and Hodgkin found it inspiring if sometimes daunting to meet people like J. J. Thomson

Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin
Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin was born in 1914 in Oxfordshire, England. The English physiologist and biophysicist received (with Andrew Fielding Huxley and Sir John Eccles ) the 1963 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of the chemical processes responsible for the passage of impulses along individual nerve fibres. He was knighted in 1972. Hodgkin was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. After conducting radar research (1939-45) for the British Air Ministry, he joined the faculty at Cambridge, where he worked (1945-52) with Huxley on measuring the electrical and chemical behaviour of individual nerve fibres. By inserting microelectrodes into the giant nerve fibres of the squid Loligo forbesi, they were able to show that the electrical potential of a fibre during conduction of an impulse exceeds the potential of the fibre at rest, contrary to the accepted theory, which postulated a breakdown of the nerve membrane during impulse conduction. They knew that the activity of a nerve fibre depends on the fact that a large concentration of potassium ions is maintained inside the fibre, while a large concentration of sodium ions is found in the surrounding solution; their experimental results (1947) indicated that the nerve membrane allows only potassium to enter the fibre during the resting phase but allows sodium to penetrate when the fibre is excited.
