War memorial
Contents
460 men from Pershore went to the Great War - one fifth of the total adult population at that time - and 101 of them never returned.
The old Norman font in the Abbey had been replaced with a new one in 1840: the memorial was erected in 1921 on the site of this Victorian font. At this time, the old font was restored and the Victorian one sent to a church in Ceylon.
The Memorial was sculpted by Alfred Drury R.A., and consists of a stone pedestal surmounted by a figure of Immortality holding an Olive Branch of Peace and a Crown of Everlasting life.
This photograph is from a 1930s postcard - the electric light fitting just visible in the background on the left dates the original photo to some time after the Abbey's electrical lighting installation in 1928. The only change to the memorial since then has been the addition of the names of the dead from WW II. A leaflet about the memorial is available from the Abbey bookstall.
Remember with thanksgiving the true and faithful men
who in these years of war
went forth from this place for God and the right
The names of those who returned not again
are here inscribed to be honoured for evermore
R.I.P.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
    Premio Nobel

The 2004 George H. Hitchings New Investigator Awards in Biomedical Research, which support Triangle-area graduate students, went to Seth Margolis and Yee Lam. Margolis, a fourth year graduate student in pharmacology and cancer biology in the laboratory of Sally Kornbluth, is a 1997 graduate of the University of Rochester. His work focuses on understanding cell cycle progression using extracts from Xenopus oocytes arrested at mitosis. Lam, a second year graduate student in mechanical engineering and materials science, earned bachelors and masters degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2001 and 2002. She is interested in using atomic force microscopy (AFM) to understand how antigens and antibodies interact. Drs. Hitchings and Elion, co-recipients of the 1988 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine for their critical insight that drugs interfering with DNA and RNA metabolism could provide routes to cures for cancer and infectious diseases, were strong supporters of BWF and tireless advocates of young scientists. Hitchings also was instrumental in the 1983 launch of the Triangle Community Foundation and donated his Nobel Prize money to the organization in 1989.

The Hitchings Award celebrates the life and accomplishments of George Hitchings, former BWF president and board chair who also founded TCF in 1983. The Elion award went to Jennifer Bushman, currently in her third year of training. Bushman is working toward improving transplantation of embryonic stem cells. She will focus on developing better ways to track differentiation of stem cells and follow their development as they engraft into new hosts.
