Hochenergiephysik an der Uni Innsbruck Einer der berühmtesten Vertreter der frühen Teilchenphysik in Innsbruck ist wohl Victor Franz Hess, der am 7.8.1912 bei einer Ballonfahrt über Mitteleuropa die kosmische Strahlung entdeckte. Als Hess 1930/31 nach Innsbruck kam, errichtete er hoch über der Stadt auf dem Hafelekar (2.300 m) eine Station zur Messung dieser Strahlung. 1936 wurde er mit dem Nobelpreis geehrt, die Station existiert noch immer. Heute müssen Teilchenphysiker (leider) nicht mehr die Berge erklimmen, um hochenergetische Teilchen zu studieren. Riesige Teilchenbeschleuniger sorgen dafür, daß solche Kollisionen unter Laborbedingungen stattfinden und sehr genau untersucht werden können. Einzelne Universitäten oder Forschungseinrichtungen können sich solch kostspielige Projekte natürlich nicht alleine leisten und so kommt es, daß sich verschiedene Länder zusammenschliessen, um diverse Großprojekte gemeinsam zu verwirklichen. Ein solches Projekt (wenn nicht das größte) ist das europäische Kernforschungsinstitut CERN in Genf/Schweiz. Die Arbeitsgruppe Hochenergiephysik der Uni Innsbruck ist dort an zwei Großexperimenten beteiligt: ALEPH und ATLAS. ALEPH (A detector for LEp PHysics) war eines der 4 Experimente am LEP (Large Electron Positron) Beschleuniger, der Ende 2001 eingestellt wurde, um Platz für den neuen, leistungsfähigeren Beschleuniger LHC (Large Hadron Collider) zu schaffen. Obwohl das Experiment selbst nicht mehr laeuft, gibt es immer noch jede Menge Daten auszuwerten. Im speziellen beschäftigt man sich in Innsbruck mit sogenannten hadronischen Events, bei denen nach der Kollision jede Menge Hadronen (wie z.Bsp. Pionen, Kaonen) entstehen.
