Gerhard Herzberg
Gerhard Herzberg ) was a pioneering theoretical chemist. Born in Germany, he fled in 1935 to Canada, where he continued his distinguished scientific career.
Herzberg's main work concerned atomic and molecular spectroscopy. He is well known for using these techniques to determine the structures of diatomic and polyatomic molecules, including free radicals difficult to investigate in any other way, and for the chemical analysis of astronomical objects.

(Ottawa, Ont.) - Free radicals and antioxidants. Photo-activated
pharmaceuticals. Better sunscreens. Today these are all scientific and
medical hot topics that in part owe their coming of age to a University of
Ottawa chemist's meticulous, three-decades-long probing of the interactions
of light and molecules. It's forefront research that has resulted in Tito Scaiano today being named winner of the 2002 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.

Dr. Gerhard Herzberg Citation Dr. Gerhard Herzberg received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1971 for "his contributions to the knowledge of electronic structure and geometry of molecules, particularly free radicals." In the presentation speech it was stated that "Dr. Gerhard Herzberg, is generally considered to be the world's foremost molecular spectroscopist and his large institute in Ottawa is the undisputed center for such research. Herzberg's elegant experimental investigations combined with his theoretical insight into their interpretation contributed to the progress of quantum mechanics while being decisive for the rapid development of molecular spectroscopy." Dr. Herzberg was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1904 and received his Bachelor's degree in 1927 and his Ph.D. degree in 1928, both in engineering, from the Darmstadt Institute of Technology. The Nazi persecution of Jews forced Dr. Herzberg to emigrate to Canada in 1935 and for a decade he was research professor and teacher at the University of Saskatchewan where he established a spectroscopy laboratory. In his acceptance speech he said "It is obvious that the work that has earned me the Nobel Prize was not done without a great deal of help. First of all, while at the University of Saskatchewan I had the full and understanding support of successive Presidents and of the Faculty of the University who, under very stringent conditions, did their utmost to make it possible for me to proceed with my scientific work."

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Gerhard Herzberg The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1971 Gerhard Herzberg was born in Hamburg, Germany, on December 25, 1904. He was married in 1929 to Luise Herzberg nee Oettinger and has two children. He was widowed in 1971. Herzberg received his early training in Hamburg and subsequently studied physics at the Darmstadt Institute of Technology where in 1928 he obtained his Dr. Ing, degree under H. Rau. Herzberg's main contributions are to the field of atomic and molecular spectroscopy. He and his associates have determined the structures of a large number of diatomic and polyatomic molecules, including the structures of many free radicals difficult to determine in any other way. Herzberg has also applied these spectroscopic studies to the identification of certain molecules in planetary atmospheres, in comets, and in interstellar space. Dr. Herzberg died in 1999. He received many honors which include the Royal Medal from the Society in 1971. He was Faraday Medallist and Lecturer of the Chemical Society of London in 1970. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1971 was awarded to him "for his contributions to the knowledge of electronic structure and geometry of molecules, particularly free radicals". Back To Main Page

Gerhard Herzberg
CASCA has lost its most distinguished member. On March 3, Dr. Gerhard Herzberg died at the age of 94. GH , as all his scientific colleagues called him, began his scientific studies in Germany in 1924. He had wanted to be an astronomer, but was persuaded that technical physics was more appropriate for someone whose family had little means. He first studied at the Technical University in Darmstadt where he received a Doctorate in Engineering Physics in 1928, and then went to the University of Gottingen as a post- doctoral fellow. His education in Germany coincided with the early development of quantum mechanics there. After a second post-doctoral year at the University of Bristol, he returned to a position in Darmstadt, but in 1934 had to give it up because his wife was Jewish. Fortunately for Canada he was assisted in finding a position at the University of Saskatchewan, and arrived there in September 1935. These were productive years for his research in atomic and molecular spectroscopy, and for writing. He translated his book on Atomic Spectra and Atomic Structure and wrote his equally renowned books on the Spectra of Diatomic Molecules and the Infrared and Raman Spectra of Polyatomic Molecules. His third book on molecular physics was published in 1966, the Electronic Spectra and Electronic Structure of Polyatomic Molecules. In 1945, Otto Struve of the University of Chicago rekindled his early interest in astrophysics and enticed him to the Yerkes Observatory. Then in 1948, the National Research Council invited
