This entry contributed by Michel Barran Edward Teller . In 1935, Herzberg left Nazi Germany and emigrated in Canada, where he became professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada (1935-1945). From there, he accepted a professorship at Yerkes Observatory, near Chicago (1945-1948). Returning to Canada, he became director of pure physics at Canada's National Research Council in Ottawa (1949-1969). He received the 1971 Nobel prize in chemistry for the discovery of energy states in molecules using spectroscopy.

Herzberg, Gerhard Pronunciation Key Herzberg, Gerhard ion with a previously unidentified spectrum from outer space, pioneering the analysis of stars, planetary atmospheres, and interstellar matter by spectrographic technology. In 1945 Herzberg joined the Yerkes Observatory of the Univ. of Chicago, where he continued his spectroscopic studies. From 1948 to 1994, he was on the staff of the National Research Council (NRC). Herzberg received the 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research into the electronic structure and geometry of molecules, particularly free radicals, which had important implications in such diverse fields as astrophysics, biology, chemistry, medicine, and physics. The NRC established the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Ottawa in his honor in 1975. His three-volume Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure (2d ed. 1992) is the seminal work in the field. herzberg, gerhard (1904). German-born Canadian physicist who usedspectrocopy to determine the electronic structure and geometry
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/H/Herzberg/1.htm
Herzberg, Gerhard German-born Canadian physicist who used spectrocopy to determine the electronic structure and geometry of molecules, especially free radicals (atoms or groups of atoms that possess a free, unbonded electron). Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1971.
Adolf Hitler
, he fled to Canada, where he became professor of physics at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, and director of the Division of Pure Physics for the National Research Council in Ottawa 1949-69. He spent 1945-49 at the Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin, USA.
Depending on the conditions, molecules absorb or emit electromagnetic radiation of discrete wavelengths. The radiation spectrum is directly dependent on the electronic and geometric structure of an atom or molecule. Herzberg discovered new lines in the spectrum of molecular oxygen; called Herzberg bands, these spectral lines have been useful in analysing the upper atmosphere. He also discovered the new molecules phosphorus nitride and phosphorus carbide; proved the existence of the methyl and methylene free radicals; and demonstrated that both neutrons and protons are part of the nucleus.
In addition, Herzberg interpreted the spectral lines of stars and comets, finding that a rare form of carbon exists in comets. He showed that hydrogen exists in the atmospheres of some planets, and identified the spectra of certain free radicals in interstellar gas.

Wybitny kanadyjski chemik, fizyk i astronom pochodzenia niemieckiego, laureat Nagrody Nobla w dziedzinie chemii w 1971 r.
Herzberg mia³ zaledwie 12 lat, kiedy razem z przyjacielem skonstruowa³ pierwszy teleskop. W pogodne noce ch³opcy je¼dzili tramwajem do miejskiego parku w rodzinnym Hamburgu, sk±d najlepiej by³o widaæ gwiazdy.
Na studiach trafi³ do Herra Hillersa, naukowca, który zarazi³ go now± wówczas teori± dotycz±c± budowy materii - fizyk± kwantow±. Dziêki prywatnemu stypendium po ukoñczeniu studiów trafi³ do Goettingen, o¶rodka badawczego, w którym wyk³ada³y najwiêksze gwiazdy fizyki, takie jak Max Born i James Franck. Jednak w 1934 r. musia³ opu¶ciæ Niemcy - jego ¿ona by³a ¯ydówk±, on sam nie mia³ wiêc szans na kontynuowanie badañ.
W 1945 r. astronomia upomnia³a siê o niego - University of Chicago zaoferowa³ Herzbergowi stanowisko w Yerkes Observatory. Herzberg jako pierwszy zacz±³ badaæ widma ¶wiat³a wysy³anego przez gwiazdy i planety. Wyczytaæ z niego mo¿na chemiczny sk³ad m.in. miêdzygwiezdnych ob³oków.
