R. Lehnig, and A. Slenczka, Emission Spectra of Free Base Phthalocyanine in Superfluid Helium Droplets . J. Chem. Phys. 118, (2003).
We report on the electronic emission spectra of free-base phthalocyanine doped into superfluid He droplets. The emission spectra of phthalocyanine obtained upon vibronic excitation show a doubling of all lines, absent in the gas phase (Ref.26). Similar features found for Mg-phthalocyanine in He droplets suggest that this doubling is due to the helium environment. Quantized relaxation states of the first helium layer surrounding the embedded molecule are discussed as likely causes of the doubling.
Jan Jasny, Alkwin Slenczka, Bernhard Dick, Design and Performance of a Miniature Cryostat for Emission Measurments in Liquid Helium . Z.Phys.Chem. 2 (2001) 183-195.
A miniature cryostat for optical emission measurments is described which uses a standard storage dewar as the liquid helium bath. Excitation and emission light is guided to and from the sample by optical fibers and spherical mirrors.

WILSON AS MEMBERS TO THE COMMITTEE ON THE NATIONAL MEDAL OF SCIENCE The President today announced his appointment of Dudley R. Herschbach, of Massachusetts, as Chairman, Cathleen S. Morawetz, Susan Graham and William J. Wilson as Members of the President's Committee for the National Medal of Science. Dr. Dudley R. Herschbach is the Frank B. Baird Professor of Science at Harvard University. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1986 and received a National Medal of Science in 1991. He is a Member of the national Academy of Sciences. Dr. Herschbach earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degrees from Stanford and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard. Dr. Cathleen S. Morawetz is a Professor of Mathematics at New York University. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Morawetz also serves as editor of a number of journals, and is the President-elect of the American Mathematics Society. Dr. Morawetz received her bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto, a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her Ph.D. from New York University. Susan L. Graham, of California, is a professor of computer science at the University of California at Berkeley. She is investigating the use of language implementation technology in the construction of interactive software development environments. Dr. Graham is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She attended Harvard before receiving her Ph.D. from Stanford. William J. Wilson, of Illinois, is a Lucy Flower Distinguished Service Professor and the Chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago. He is the author of four books on the significance of race. Dr. Wilson also serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for National Policy. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Wilson received his bachelor's degree from Wilberforce University, his master's from Bowling Green State University, and his Ph.D. from Washington State University. The National Medal of Science was created by statute in 1959 to recognize up to twenty individuals annually who have made outstanding contributions to science and engineering. The Committee, comprised of twelve leading scientists and engineers from a number of fields, receives nominations, evaluates them, and makes its recommendations to the President. -30-30-30-

( BW)(MI-ISEF-2000) Nobel Laureates Participate in Intel ISEF 2000 in Detroit
ISEF 2000
DETROIT(BUSINESS WIRE)May 9, 2000High school students participating in this year's International Science and Engineering Fair 2000, May 7-12 in Detroit, will have a chance to meet with a global panel of scientific "superstars."
Five Nobel Laureates, two Charles Stark Draper Prize winners, and one Enrico Fermi Award recipient will be visiting the 51st annual science fair at the Cobo Convention Center and participating in a question-and-answer panel discussion with the student finalists on Tuesday, May 9, 12-2 p.m.
"It will be a lively panel discussion," said Tzeitel Hirni, Science Service marketing manager. "The biggest thing that the Nobel Laureates and other award-winning scientists want to do during the visit to ISEF is meet with the students themselves. They don't want to be VIPs. They want to talk with the students."
The Science Service, which is based in Washington, D.C., has been coordinating the annual International Science and Engineering Fair since the first ISEF in 1950. The Science Service is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of science among people of all ages through publications and educational programs.
The International Science and Engineering Fair is held in a different city each year. Detroit's plans to hold the first ISEF of the 21st century were laid back in 1987. The event will draw thousands of students, judges, volunteers, chaperones and translators to Detroit's downtown and is estimated to generate $8 million for the Southeastern Michigan economy.

Dudley R. Herschbach
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Dudley R Herschbach Dudley Robert Herschbach (born June 18 ), a chemist and Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University , won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry jointly with Yuan T. Lee and John C. Polanyi "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes." Herschbach and Lee specifically worked with molecular beams, performing so-called "crossed molecular beam" experiments that enabled a detailed molecular-level understanding of many elementary reaction processes. Herschbach's research has ranged broadly over the field of chemical physics, including much theoretical work in dimensional scaling. Hershbach's teaching ranges from graduate seminars on chemical kinetics to an introductory undergraduate course in general chemistry that he taught for many years at Harvard and described as his "most challenging assignment." Herschbach has been a strong proponent of science education and science among the general public, and frequently gives lectures to students of all ages, imbuing them with his infective enthusiasm for science and his playful spirit of discovery. Herschbach was born in San Jose, California
