herschbach, dudley R. (1932). I was born in San Jose, California on June18, 1932, the first of six children of Robert and Dorothy herschbach.

Herschbach, Dudley R. Donald Menzel of the Harvard Observatory. For the next few years, I regularly made star maps and snuck out at night to make observations from a locust tree in our back yard. When I attended Campbell High School, I took all the science and mathematics courses offered. Chemistry I found at first puzzling and then most intriguing, thanks to John Meischke, a superb teacher. At the time, I was at least as interested in football and other sports; perhaps that presaged my later pursuit of molecular collisions. Like most of my classmates, I did not expect to attend college; none of my known relatives had graduated from a university. However, my teachers and coaches presumed I would go. Indeed, I received offers of football scholarships from some universities to which I had not even applied for admission. My Doctoral Thesis, done under E. Bright Wilson, Jr., was titled: "Internal Rotation and Microwave Spectroscopy". This presented theoretical calculations and experiments dealing with hindered internal rotation of methyl groups. The height of the hindering barrier could be accurately determined because the observed spectra were very sensitive to tunneling between equivalent potential mimima. Much that shaped my later research I learned from Bright Wilson and other faculty, especially George Kistiakowsky and Bill Klemperer, or from fellow students, especially Jerry Swalen, Victor Laurie and Larry Krisher.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Dudley R. Herschbach The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1986 Dudley R. Herschbach was born in San Jose, California on june 18, 1932, the first of six children of Robert and Dorothy Herschbach. His father was then a building contractor and later a rabbit breeder. Other honors include the Pure Chemistry Prize of the American Chemical Society in 1965, the Linus Pauling Medal in 1978, the Michael Polanyi Medal in 1981, and the Irving Langmuir Prize in Chemical Physics in 1983. The Nobel Prize In Chemistry was awarded to Dudley R. Herschbach, Yuan T. Lee, and John C. Polanyi "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes". Chemistry also brought his wife Georgina Botyos to Harvard as an organic graduate student. They were married in 1964 and their daughters Lisa and Brenda arrived as harbingers before she received her Ph. D. in 1968. Back To Main Page

Born: 18 June 1932, San Jose, California Education: Stanford University;Ph.D. in Chemical Physics (1958) at Harvard University Dudley R(obert) Herschbach was a member of the Chemistry Faculty at the University of California, Berkeley (1959-1963), before returning to his alma mater, Harvard Univeristy as Professor of Chemistry (1963), where he is now Baird Professor of Science (since 1976). He developed the method of crossed molecular beams, directed and well-defined fluxes of molecules, to and beyond the point where detailed studies of chemical reactions have been possible. Working with others, he elucidated the mechanisms of chemical reactions, detailing the sequence of events and energy release. Prior to his work, any fundamental understanding of what molecular features influence the rate of chemical reactions had been slow in developing. Whether a chemical reaction takes place, the colliding molecules often requires some special property such as high velocity or large internal energy. However, the directions and velocities of the molecular motion in a gas or a liquid are mainly random. Consequently, the collisions between the molecules are ill-defined as regards, for example, the kinetic energy in the collision. The details of the reaction thus become blurred and cannot be observed precisely enough. In the figure, two directed molecular fluxes are shown, .i.e. idealized molecular beams. In the crossing region, a reaction can take place and new molecules can form. In this special case oxygen atoms (red) react with hydrogen atoms (black), and form a long-lived complex, which is an energy-rich and thus unstable water molecule. Each complex dissociates finally to a hydrogen atom and a hydroxyl radical.
