Arthur Henderson, the son of a cotton spinner, was born in Glasgow on 13th September, 1863. His father, suffered long periods of unemployment, and so Arthur was forced to leave school at nine years old to find work as an errand boy in a photographer's shop. Arthur's wages became even more important to the family income after the death of his father in 1874.
When Arthur's mother married Robert Heath, the family moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne . At the age of twelve Arthur found work at the Robert Stephenson locomotive works. Despite a ten hour day, Arthur attended evening classes in an effort to improve his education.

one of the chief organizers of the British Labour Party. He was Britain's secretary of state for foreign affairs from June 1929 to August 1931 and won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1934.
An iron molder at Robert Stephenson's locomotive works and foundry in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, Henderson became secretary of the Newcastle local of the Ironfounders' Union, served as a Liberal Party member of the municipal councils of Newcastle, Darlington, and Durham, and in 1903 was elected mayor of Darlington. Later that year he was sent to the House of Commons as a Labour Party member from Barnard Castle Division, Durham, in what was the first electoral victory of a Labourite over candidates from both the Conservative and Liberal parties. Although never an outstanding orator, he was chief party whip in the Commons in 1914, 1921-23, and 1925-27. In 1908-10 and 1914-17 he was chairman of the Labour Party, and from 1911 to 1934 he held the more demanding office of party secretary. During 1918 Henderson devoted his energies to the party secretaryship. With the Socialist reformer Sidney Webb he largely wrote the party constitution, which made Labour for the first time an avowed Socialist party with effective constituency organizations. Six years later, when Labour held power for the first time (January-November 1924), Henderson served as home secretary under MacDonald.

ARTHUR HENDERSON
Chris Wrigley pp xii210 1990 hardback Arthur Henderson is a pivotal figure in the emergence of the British trade union and labour movement. Along perhaps with Herbert Morrison and James Callaghan, he has been the central and most representative personality in the British Labour party's evolution from being a party of protest to becoming a party of power. Professor Chris Wrigley, an outstanding authority on British labour developments, traces his career from trade-unionist to international statesman. `...Scholarly, thoughtful and well- researched...Henderson epitomises the strength and limitations of Labourism: a man of dogged determination and of rock-solid loyalty, he was instrumental in the building of Labour into a serious competitor for power.' (Parliamentary Affairs) `...Wrigley's description of Henderson's career is excellent and his book will be valuable to students and scholars from the undergraduate level on...' Commentary Children Researcher List Register Report ... Home I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandson of Thomas and Margaret Henderson. Special thanks to Homer Barnes and Minnie Ledford Barnes and Ralph Johnson for data shared on this family. There are birth dates for everyone in this family, and I think they came from an old Family Bible, but I don't know who has it now. Thomas M. Henderson was born 23 Aug 1834 (per tombstone) somewhere in Tennessee. I don't know what county. His Civil War Discharge papers lists his birth place as "Rutherford Co, NC", but all of his census records (1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900) list his birth place as Tennessee. The 1880 and 1900 census show that Thomas' father was born in NC, so perhaps that is the Rutherford County connection. There is a "Rutherford" County, Tennessee, but I don't think that is where Thomas was born, but it is possible. I have not found what Thomas' middle initial of "M" stood for.

http://www.nobel.se/peace/laureates/1934/henderson-bio.html
Arthur Henderson (September 13, 1863-October 20, 1935) was born in Glasgow, the son of David Henderson, a manual worker. When his father died in 1872, leaving the family in poverty, Arthur left school to work in a photographer's shop. Upon his mother's remarriage the family moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where Arthur returned to school for three years. Aged twelve, he became an apprentice at the Robert Stephenson and Sons' General Foundry Works. The dinner hour in the foundry, with its lively discussions, became his classroom and the newspapers his textbooks. Having joined the Ironfounders' Union at the age of eighteen when he achieved journeyman status, he was elected within a short time secretary of the Newcastle lodge and for the remainder of his life held office continuously in his union at the local, district, or national level.
In the course of his work in the Methodist church, which he had joined as a young man, Henderson met Eleanor Watson and married her in 1888. They had a daughter and three sons. The eldest of the three sons, all of whom served in the armed forces in World War I, was killed in action; the other two became the father's colleagues in the House of Commons in the last decade or so of his life.
The skill in speaking that he developed at the meetings of the Tyneside Debating Society and in his work as a lay preacher, helped to launch him on a political career begun with his election to the post of town councillor in 1892. In the same year he was chosen by his union to be their district delegate, a full-time salaried position. In 1896 he moved his family to Darlington; there, he was elected to the Durham County Council and in 1903 became the first Labor mayor of Darlington.
