Lt. Ernest Miller Hemingway AMERICAN RED CROSS by Pat Evans Having decided to sign up for a battlefield tour in Italy, I set about reading all that I could find about the Italian campaign during the Great War. Until then I had managed to avoid reading " A Farewell to Arms", the most famous novel set during the war in Italy, or even seeing the film, so I thought that I had better at least give it a try. I cannot say that I really enjoyed the story of Frederic Henry, an American who had volunteered as an officer with an ambulance unit of the Italian Army, and his love affair with an English nurse. However, it seemed to cover places that I knew I would be visiting, so I persisted. In the book, the hero, an American, claims that the reason why he had joined the Italian Army was because he found himself in Italy at the right time and that he was able to speak Italian. His ambulance unit is based near Gorizia, and he is sent up into the nearby mountains along twisting roads made into camouflaged tunnels by the use of matting on the sides and tops and comes into the range of the Austrian artillery. There is a vivid description of how Frederic is wounded as he experiences a sudden flash of light and heat and hears a loud roaring sound as he feels as if he is leaving his body. Although his legs have been badly wounded he manages to pull himself backwards towards his colleagues and tries to use one of his puttees as a tourniquet to try to save the life of one of his friends. When the stretcher bearers arrive Frederic tells them to leave him and attend to the others whom he thinks have been more badly wounded.

# Who is Ernest Miller?

# Ernest or Ernie?
Whatever works for you. I've been called many different things over the years. # Okay, Ernie, what is the Information Society Project at Yale Law School The official answer is that the ISP is an intellectual center at Yale Law School for the study of a new age in which telecommunications and intellectual property are central determinants of the structure of society, the development of human culture and democratic legitimacy. Basically, they are a bunch of really bright people working on a variety of projects dealing with the intersection of technology and democracy. # There are information society projects at Yale Law School Harvard and Stanford Law School . Is this important and what kind of role do you think these centers may play?

Hemingway Notes
Novelist Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21, 1899. He was the second of six children born to Clarence Edmonds Hemingway, a physician and Grace Hall Hemingway, a singer. He was a journalist/war correspondent, a fisherman, hunter, and a boxer. During the course of his lifetime he was married to four women, three of whom were writers. He had three sons. Unable to join the army because of a congenital eye defect, Hemingway became an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in the first world war. His experiences during the war were transformative and would years later become grist for several short stories and the novel A Farewell to Arms After the war, Hemingway went home to Oak Park briefly and then moved to Chicago. Shortly after this he and his first wife, Hadley, moved to Paris where Hemingway lived among a group of what has been called 'expatriot' writers that are today key to literature as we know it. The group included James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, to name a few. It was during Hemingway's life in Paris that he wrote The Sun Also Rises The misconception that Hemingway founded a 'lost generation' is a myth that persists to this day. In truth, Hemingway never professed to believe in or belong to a 'lost generation.' He made this clear in

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of seventeen. Before the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded, was decorated by the Italian Government, and spent considerable time in hospitals. After his return to the United States, he became a reporter for Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the Greek Revolution.
During the twenties, Hemingway became a member of the group of expatriate Americans in Paris, which he described in his first important work, The Sun Also Rises (1926). Equally successful was A Farewell to Arms (1929), the study of an American ambulance officer's disillusionment in the war and his role as a deserter. Hemingway used his experiences as a reporter during the civil war in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel
