"Não há palavras para explicar, mas certamente estou contente, orgulhoso, surpreso e satisfeito", disse. Nascido em Sioux City (Iowa) e atualmente com 64 anos, Heeger é professor de física e diretor do Instituto de Polímeros e Sólidos Orgânicos da Universidade da Califórnia em Santa Bárbara. Sobre a área que pesquisa, o cientista afirma: "É um terreno interdisciplinar, na fronteira entre a física e a química. E quando alguém vai mais além para explorar novos conceitos, os cientistas ficam céticos, é normal", explicou. Porém, ele disse que "esta disciplina tem crescido e prosperado.
