che mi unisce all’universo"

Artist of Skepticism: A Profile of Knut Hamsun
Article # : Section : BOOK WORLD Issue Date : 3,849 Words Author : Eric P. Olsen
"Never has the Nobel Prize been awarded to one worthier of it," pronounced Thomas Mann of the Norwegian novelist Knut Hamsun. André Gide compared him to Dostoevsky but thought Hamsun was "perhaps even more subtle" than the Russian master. Maxim Gorky, writing privately in 1927, confessed to Hamsun: "I tell you this quite sincerely, at this moment you are the greatest artist in Europe; there is no one who can compare with you."
Today Hamsun is little known or read in the English world and remains a deeply problematic presence in his homeland. Streets, parks, and monuments commemorate the names of Henrik Ibsen and Bj¿rnstjerne Bj¿rnson, but not of Hamsun. His name draws an ambiguous stare, a reaction that readers of his novels might be forgiven for thinking a more apt memorial than a conventional work of bronze or stone. What has happened? Knut Hamsun's rise to international renown in the first decades of the twentieth century was eclipsed by his fatal alliance with the Nazi cause in the final years of his long life, an act of misplaced nationalism rather than ideological affinity.

(Knut Hamsun, Sult)

Encyclopedia Definition: Knut Hamsun
Knut Hamsun August 4 February 19 ) was a leading Norwegian author, born in Lom under the name of Knud Pedersen. He first received acclaim for his novel Sult , translated as Hunger . The semi-autobiographical work described a young writer's descent into near madness as a result of hunger and poverty. In many ways, the novel presages the writings of Franz Kafka and other twentieth-century novelists, who explored the madness of the contemporary human condition. The book has since become one of the most influential novels of the 20th century. Other important works by Hamsun include Pan ) and The Growth of the Soil ), for which he received the Nobel Prize in literature in Despite his immense popularity in Norway and around the world, Hamsun's reputation waned considerably because of his support of Vidkun Quisling 's Nazi regime during World War II . Following a meeting with Joseph Goebbels in , he sent Goebbels his Nobel Prize medal as a gift. Hamsun did meet with Adolf Hitler , however, and tried to have him remove Josef Terboven from the position of Reichskommissar of Norway.

Knut Hamsun
The magazine 'Viking', published by the 'Sons of Norway' has in its Jan 1990 issue a small tract honoring the great Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun who died on February 19, 1952. The occasion, however, is not so much the date of his death as it is that 1990 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of his famous book 'Hunger', written in the style of the 'social novel' so popular around the turn of the century. Hamsun enjoyed great fame during the 50 years from about 1890 until he made the fatal faux pas of backing Hitler when Norway became occupied by Germany in 1940. This was of course not 'acceptable' to the literary world and the publishing houses, and after WW II Hamsun was tried for treason. The charges were dropped because of his age but heavy fines were imposed. Apologists tried to put his political 'mistake' down to his advanced age, but the grand old gentleman would hear nothing of the sort; at the age of 90 he wrote his last book "On Overgrown Paths', in which he made it perfectly clear that he had made his choice and he offered no excuses for his opinions. Knut Hamsun (born Pedersen) made a great impact on the literary community in the early part of the century. He was compared to Dostoyevski and considered the equal of other famous Norwegian navelists such as Ibsen, Bjoernson and Jones Lie. The 'social' novel was in vogue at the time and 'Hunger' dealt with the problems of the day. His works were
