Knut Hamsun (1859-1952)
Biographical note
Knut Hamsun was a leading Norwegian author, born in Lom under the name of Knut Pedersen. He first received acclaim for his 1890 novel Sult , translated as Hunger . The work, which is semi-autobiographical, described a young writer's descent into near madness as a result of hunger and poverty. In many ways, the novel presages the writings of Franz Kafka and other twentieth-century novelists, who explored the madness of the contemporary human condition. Other important works by Hamsun include Pan (1894) and The Growth of the Soil (1917), for which he received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1920. from Wikipedia More ...

The Growth of the Soil
Knut Hamsun By W. W. Worster
Reprinted from The Fortnightly Review, December, 1920. Those readers are, perhaps, most fortunate who come upon such a book as this without foretaste or preparation. To the mind under spell of an asthetic or emotional appeal, the steps that went to make it, the stages whereby the author passed, are as irrelevant as the logarithms that went to build an aeroplane. Yet it is only by knowledge of such steps that the achievement can be fully understood. And this from the pen of the man who wrote Sult, Mysterier, and Pan. His Nordland origin is in itself significant; it means an environment of month-long nights and concentrated summers, in which all feelings are intensified, and love and dread and gratitude and longing are nearer and deeper than in milder and more temperate regions, where elemental opposites are, as it were, reciprocally diluted. In 1890, at the age of thirty, Hamsun attracted attention by the publication of Sult (Hunger). Sult is a record of weeks of starvation in a city; the semi-delirious confession of a man whose physical and mental faculties have slipped beyond control. He speaks and acts irrationally, and knows it, watches himself at his mental antics and takes himself to task for the same. And he asks himself: Is it a sign of madness? It might seem so. The extraordinary associations, the weird fancies and bizarre impulses that are here laid bare give an air of convincing verisimilitude to the supposed confessions of a starving journalist. But, as a matter of fact, Hamsun has no need of extraneous influences to invest his characters with originality. Starving or fed, they can be equally erratic. This is seen in his next book, Mysterier.

Hamsun, Knut
eigentlich Knut Pedersen
Norwegischer Schriftsteller.

Knut Hamsun - Without Pedigree
A short biography of Knut Hamsun (August 04, 1860 – February 19, 1952): Probably one of the most controversial figures in Norwegian literature, Knud Pedersen Hamsund (1860-1952) had earned an equal share of bouquets and brickbats during his lifetime and afterwards.
By Anirban Ray Choudhury, 2/16/2004 Probably one of the most controversial figures in Norwegian literature, Knud Pedersen Hamsund (1860-1952) had earned an equal share of bouquets and brickbats during his lifetime and afterwards. Born in Lom (on August 04, 1860) in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley in central Norway, the fourth son to Peder and Tora Pedersen, Knut’s life as a young boy was not very remarkable. When he was four, the family moved to the harsh land of Hamaroy, where circumstances soon called upon him to serve as an errand boy to a shoemaker. Toiling for his daily bread and devoid of any meaningful friendships, the future Nobel Laureate turned to the written word for solace and company. Two books and umpteen jobs later, he moved to Oslo (erstwhile Christiania). It was perhaps here that the protagonist of Hunger, his most widely read novella, began taking shape. As a young writer ( Hamsun
