Roger Charles Louis Guillemin
Roger Charles Louis Guillemin
French-born American physiologist whose researches into the hormones produced by the hypothalamus gland resulted in his being awarded a share (along with Andrew Schally and Rosalyn Yalow) of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1977.
Guillemin was educated at the universities of Dijon, Lyon, and Montreal. He taught at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, from 1953 to 1970, except for the years 1960-63, when he was on the faculty of the College de France in Paris. From 1970 he was a resident fellow and research professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif. Guillemin became a U.S. citizen in 1963. Guillemin proved the hypothesis that the hypothalamus releases hormones that regulate the pituitary gland. Among the hypothalamic hormones that he and his colleagues discovered, isolated, analyzed, or synthesized were TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone), which regulates thyroid activity; GHRH (growth hormone-releasing hormone), which causes the pituitary to release gonadotropin; and somatostatin, which regulates the activities of the pituitary gland and the pancreas. Guillemin also discovered an important class of proteins called endorphins that are involved in the perception of pain.

5. Roger Guillemin - Autobiography
roger guillemin – Autobiography. I was born in France on January11, 1924 in the small town of Dijon, the capital of Burgundy.
http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1977/guillemin-autobio.html
During these five years of medical studies, I had always been interested in endocrinology, probably because two of my best teachers of clinical medicine, P. Etienne-Martin and J. Charpy were themselves interested in what were in those days the early concepts of endocrinology and the beginning logical therapy it appeared to offer. I always hoped that somehow I could one day work in a laboratory. In France you had terminated your medical studies after 5 years of curriculum; you could then practice medicine - which I did for some time. To obtain the degree of Doctor in Medicine you had to write and defend a dissertation, a thesis; that was usually pro forma . I decided, however, to write a dissertation for the M.D. degree that I would enjoy, hopefully on some work I could perform in a laboratory.
One day, I learned that Hans Selye would lecture in Paris on his alarm reaction and the endocrinology of the general adaptation syndrome. I went to hear him. The magnetism of the man was extraordinary. I went to talk to him after one of his lectures. A few months later I was in Selye's newly created Institute of Experimental Medicine and Surgery at the University of Montreal , with a modest fellowship from Selye's funds. In one year I completed some experimental work on desoxycorticosterone-induced hypertension in bilaterally nephrectomized rats kept alive for several weeks by peritoneal dialysis; that constituted the material for the thesis necessary in the French system to obtain the M.D. degree, which I obtained in Lyon upon the defense of that dissertation, in 1949. Not much interested in the academism and formalism of a research career within the French system that was then open to me, I returned to Selye's Institute, and three years later eventually obtained a Ph.D. degree in physiology in 1953. In these four years I had learned experimental endocrinology in a remarkable program jointly conducted between

Guillemin, Roger Charles Louis
French-born US endocrinologist. He has isolated and identified various hormones, for which he received the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, together with his co-worker Andrew Schally (1926- ) and US physicist Rosalyn Yalow . Guillemin also discovered endorphins.
Guillemin was born in Dijon and educated there and at Lyon. He moved to the USA 1953 and did most of his work at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, becoming professor 1963. In 1970 he joined the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California.
Guillemin found that the brain controls the pituitary gland by means of hormones produced by central neurons - the neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus. He worked with Lithuanian refugee Schally 1957-62, and later their investigations were parallel. Between 1968 and 1973 they isolated and synthesized three hypothalamic hormones which regulate the secretion of the anterior pituitary gland.
