When he eventually switched to chemistry, it wasn't to the mathematical province of physical chemistry but to organic chemistry. While attempting to find an efficient catalyst for the process of methylation, he noted that Zn in diethyl ether had been used for this purpose and wondered whether the Mg/ether combination might be successful. Grignard reagents were first reported in 1900 and Grignard used this work for his doctoral thesis in 1901. In 1910, Grignard obtained a professorship at the University of Nancy and in 1912 was awarded the Nobel prize for chemistry which he shared with Paul Sabatier who had made advances in Nickel catalysed hydrogenation. His boss, Barbier, had been trying this sort of chemistry for some time, but Victor was the genius who solved the problem. This discovery in 1901 changed the course of organic chemistry and won him the Nobel Prize in 1912. We now refer to such compounds as Grignard Reagents - and they are the first tool in your bag. Victor's breakthrough came with two discoveries - an ether solvent was vital and the whole chemistry must be carried out bone dry . You take an alkyl halide (preferably a bromide or iodide but a very reactive chloride such as tertiary-butyl chloride or benzyl chloride will be OK) magnesium metal and ether (dried with sodium metal) and with a little persuasion you get a vigorous reaction resulting in a Grignard reagent. The reagent is used in solution (it is soluble in ether) and is never isolated. The metal is positively polarised and the alkyl group thus is like a carbanion. It certainly behaves as a carbanion. All kinds of alkyl halides react - and amazingly, even bromobenzene and other aryl bromides and iodides react easily with magnesium. This is particularly surprising since the aromatic halogen is so unreactive. For example, it is inert to refluxing aqueous sodium hydroxide even above 200C.

Grignard, Victor Victor Grignard est né à Cherbourg le 6 mai 1871. Après de brillantes études secondaires, il entre à l'Ecole Normale spéciale de Ciuny, en Saône-et-Loire, où son séjour, qui devait être de deux ans, est écourté par la fermeture de l'Ecole en 1891. Il choisit alors de poursuivre ses études à la Faculté des Sciences de Lyon, et prépare une licence de mathématiques qu'il termine après son service militaire. Sa formation de mathématicien ne le prédisposait donc pas à faire de la chimie; pourtant il accepte, sans grand enthousiasme semble-t-il, un poste de préparateur dans le laboratoire de Barbier, titulaire de la chaire de Chimie générale, lui-même assisté de Bouveault, maître de conférences. Le sujet de thèse de Grignard, "Action de l'iodure de méthyle sur les cétones en présence de magnésium pour obtenir des alcools tertiaires", tire son origine d'une expérience faite par Barbier. Ce demier, travaillant sur les essences naturelles, avait eu besoin de diméthylhepténol. Disposant de méthylhepténol, il avait pensé l'utiliser pour préparer l'alcool tertiaire en question selon la méthode décrite par Saytzeff, fondée sur l'action de l'iodure de méthyle en présence du zinc. Mais n'ayant pas obtenu les résultats attendus, Barbier avait substitué le magnésium au zinc et utilisé comme solvant l'éther anhydre. Ayant réussi à préparer le diméthylhepténol, il ne continua pas tout de suite des recherches dans ce domaine; pourtant, comme il avait pressenti l'intérêt de cette synthèse, il confia la poursuite de son étude à Grignard.

Members of the class contain a hydrocarbon radical, magnesium, and a halogen such as chlorine. He shared the 1912 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Grignard was born in Cherbourg and studied at Lyon. He became professor at Nancy 1910. During World War I he headed a department at the Sorbonne concerned with the development of chemical warfare. From 1919 he was professor at Lyon. Grignard reagents added to formaldehyde (methanal) produce a primary alcohol; with any other aldehyde they form secondary alcohols, and added to ketones give rise to tertiary alcohols. They will also add to a carboxylic acid to produce first a ketone and ultimately a tertiary alcohol.

Chemically, a Grignard reagent is an organic magnesium halide dissolved in a nonreactive solvent (typically dry ethyl ether). The substance is made up of an organic group, e.g., an alkyl or aryl group, joined by a highly polar covalent bond (see chemical bond ) to magnesium, while the magnesium is joined by an ionic bond to a halogen ion, e.g., bromide or iodide. A Grignard reagent will react with water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, or almost any electrophilic organic compound. The reaction of Grignard reagents with aldehydes to form alcohols is of particular importance in the laboratory. Because Grignard reagents are so unstable, they are generally prepared just before use by reacting an organic halide, e.g., methyl iodide, with magnesium metal in a completely dry solvent; air is usually excluded from the reaction vessel, e.g., by flushing it with nitrogen. Grignard reagents are named after Victor Grignard , a French chemist, who received a Nobel Prize (1912) for their discovery.
