Mikhail Gorbachev
Born in 1931, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev became a member of the Soviet Communist party central committee in 1971. He was made a member of the Politburo in 1980 and general secretary of the Communist party in 1985. Gorbachev immediately undertook a campaign against corruption and economic mismanagement in the party bureaucracy, launching the drive for glasnost (openness). In 1987, Gorbachev announced proposals for economic perestroika (reconstruction) with the aim of decreasing the authority of central government and promoting democracy. The industrial sector was modernized and encouraged to become self-sufficient. Gorbachev withdrew the Soviet army from Afghanistan in 1988-89, initiated the end of the Cold War with the West, and signed the INF treaty with the US in 1988 to dismantle nuclear arms in Europe. These moves raised his status with Western leaders, but at home he was not so fortunate.
He was elected to the newly created post of president of the Soviet Union in 1990, but the failure of his agricultural policies, the continuing weakness of the Soviet economy, and the desperate shortage of consumer goods rendered him increasingly unpopular, and he was further criticized for using military forces to suppress unrest in Lithuania in 1991.

Mikhail Gorbachev Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, one of the leading statesmen of our time, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. In making its presentation, the Nobel Committee cited his contributions to arms control and disarmament, improved relations between East and West, and the historic reforms underway in his own country. These significant accomplishments reflect the vision that characterized President Gorbachev's leadership. Born in 1931 in the Stavropol region of the North Caucasus, Gorbachev grew up on a collective farm where his father worked at a tractor station. He graduated from Moscow University in 1955 with a degree in law, returned to Stavropol and was rapidly promoted in the local political hierarchy. Taking a second degree, in agriculture, Gorbachev entered the national scene, moved to Moscow as Secretary of Agriculture in the Central Committee and, in 1980, became the youngest full member of the Politburo. He shaped and advocated his policies of perestroika (new thinking) and glasnost (openness) throughout the 1980s, from increasingly powerful platforms. Named in 1985 General Secretary of the Central Committee, at that time the country's most influential post, Gorbachev was elected the first President of the Soviet Union by a reformed parliament in 1989.

There was a touch of 'Sunset Boulevard' about meeting the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev.
Gorbachev: Largely ignored by the people of his own country. In the words of Norma Desmond, the fading actress in the Hollywood movie: "I am big. It's the pictures that got smaller." If Mr Gorbachev were to use similar words, he might have a fair point. No leader since Vladimir Lenin changed his country so profoundly. And yet, despite his achievements, at 72 and in good mental and physical health, Mr Gorbachev is largely ignored by the people of his own country. Blame Yeltsin Mr Gorbachev's faithful assistant, Pavel Palazchenko, who translated for him throughout the great power-summits of the 1980s, likes to refer to his boss as "The President". A 70th birthday card on the Gorbachev Foundation site
Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev won a glowing tribute from Russian President Vladimir Putin on his 70th birthday, and widespread acclaim from the formerly hostile Russian media.
A whole epoch is rightfully linked to your name Vladimir Putin Throughout the 1990s, despite his popularity in the West, Mr Gorbachev was despised by Russian liberals for having tried to save the Soviet Union, and by Russian conservatives for having presided over its collapse. His relations with President Boris Yeltsin were strained, but Mr Yeltsin's successor told him on Friday that a "whole epoch is rightfully linked to your name". With daughter Irina at a concert in his honour Mr Putin thanked him for introducing an era of reform and for continuing now to promote "civil dialogue and a democratic society" through his Gorbachev Foundation.
