: 1990 Nobel Peace Prize
Cause : Leading role in the peace process which today characterizes important parts of the international community
Biography
Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev was born in the village of Privolnoye near Stavropol, Russia in 1931. He also worked on a collective farm, which in 1949 exceeded its harvest plan awarding young Gorbachev his first award, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Mikhail Gorbachev became a candidate member of the Communist Party the next year and a full member in 1952. Also in 1950, he entered the Moscow State University's Law School and graduated in 1955.
In 1967, Gorbachev graduated from the Stavropol Agriculture Institute with an agriculture economy degree and was appointed Second Secretary Stavropol Kraikom, responsible for agriculture a year later. His performance continues to warrant his climb and in 1970, he is appointed the First Secretary of the Stavropol Kraikom and soon after is elected full member of the Central Committee at the 24th Party Congress. With this post, he became the Stavropol Area Representative in the Supreme Soviet in 1974. He traveled to West Germany in 1975 as head of an official delegation, on invitation of a local communist party. By January of 1979, as Secretary of Central Committee in charge of Agriculture following Kulakov's death, Gorbachev was 28th in the Party Hierarchy. In November of that year he became a candidate member of the Politburo. As Head of Agriculture, Gorbachev began work on Brezhnev's 10-year Food Plan in 1980 but several bad harvests left Gorbachev's fate in limbo. Brezhnev's death in 1982 drew attention away from Gorbachev's seeming failures. He then began focusing on other national duties and in 1983, he headed up a Soviet delegation to Canada and later that year, he was left in charge of day-to-day operations while Andropov was on vacation. Gorbachev also headed the crisis management team in charge of the Korean Air Liner incident in Sakhalin.

Over the course of Yury Andropov's 15-month tenure (1982-84) as general secretary of the Communist Party, Gorbachev became one of the Politburo's most highly active and visible members; and, after Andropov died and Konstantin Chernenko became general secretary in February 1984, Gorbachev became a likely successor to the latter. Chernenko died on March 10, 1985, and the following day the Politburo elected Gorbachev general secretary of the CPSU. Upon his accession, he was still the youngest member of the Politburo.

The Education of Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev
An intimate biography of the private man By George J. Church. Reported by David Aikman/Washington, James O. Jackson/Moscow and John Kohan/Stavropol Officials of the Zavorovo state farm near Moscow had prepared carefully for the big day last August. They had even built a special staircase to spare their distinguished visitor the indignity of climbing down a hill to the potato fields below the main road. Mikhail Gorbachev would have none of it. Stepping out of his ZIL limousine, he gave the staircase a dismissive wave and scrambled down the steep incline in his neatly pressed gray business suit, leaving his surprised entourage to run after him in full view of television cameras. At the bottom of the hill, Gorbachev asked the farmers, lined up beside their equipment like soldiers on parade, about the mood on the farm. "Good. Businesslike," came the replies. Gorbachev was not satisfied. "I always hear the same answer," he said. "[But] there are always problems." For example, he asked, was everything available "except for vodka," a teasing reference to his antialcoholism campaign. Well, no, one farmer mumbled. It was the season for making jams and jellies, and sugar was scarce. Gorbachev shot back: Do you know why? Moonshiners are buying up all the sugar to make home brew. "Let's talk straight with one another," said the leader. "Isn't it time to bring the making of moonshine to an end? That sort of people belong back in the times when the dinosaurs lived."

Man of the Decade Gorbachev: The Unlikely Patron of Change
By Lance Morrow The 1980s came to an end in what seemed like a magic act, performed on a world-historical stage. Trapdoors flew open, and whole regimes vanished. The shell of an old world cracked, its black iron fragments dropping away, and something new, alive, exploded into the air in a flurry of white wings. Revolution took on a sort of electronic lightness of being. A crowd of half a million Czechoslovaks in Wenceslas Square would powder into electrons, stream into space at the speed of light, bounce off a satellite and shoot down to recombine in millions of television images around the planet. The transformation had a giddy, hallucinatory quality, its surprises tumbling out night after night. The wall that divided Berlin and sealed an international order crumbled into souvenirs. The cold war, which seemed for so long part of the permanent order of things, was peacefully deconstructing before the world's eyes. After years of numb changelessness, the communist world has come alive with an energy and turmoil that have taken on a bracing, potentially anarchic life of their own. Not even Stalinist Rumania was immune. The magician who set loose these forces is a career party functionary, faithful communist, charismatic politician, international celebrity and impresario of calculated disorder named Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. He calls what he is doingand permittinga revolution. His has (so far) been a bloodless revolution, without the murderous, conspiratorial associations that the word has carried in the past. In novel alliance with the glasnost of world communications, Gorbachev became the patron of change: Big Brother's better twin. His portraits, like icons at a saint's-day festival, waved amid a swarm of Czechs. The East German young chanted "Gorby! Gorby!" to taunt the police.

Gorbachev and President Ronald Reagan at the Geneva Summit on November 21, 1985. For most of the 20th century, the United States and the Soviet Union grappled for power, sweeping most of the world into the conflict between "communism" and "democracy."
Soviet president Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev's efforts to democratize the Soviet Union's political system and decentralize its economy eventually led to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Upon becoming General Secretary of the Community Party in 1985, Gorbachev quickly set about resuscitating the Soviet Union's economy, which had grown stagnant during Leonid Brezhnev's term in power (1964-1982). He called for rapid technological modernization and increased worker productivity, and he tried to make the weighty Soviet bureaucracy more efficient.
From 1987-1988, Gorbachev initiated glasnost ("openness"), which called for increased freedoms of expression and information, and perestroika ("restructuring"), which instigated the first attempts to democratize the Soviet government.
