ABSTRACT
The objective of this biographical sketch is to give a brief outline of Camillo Golgi’s life and major contributions to the science of physiology and anatomy. In Golgi’s lifespan from 1843 to 1926, he completed medical school, clarified the structure of a neuron, discovered the sensory innervation of the tendon, discovered and named the Golgi apparatus in the cell and many other great accomplishments. He and Santiago Ramón y Cajal also won a Nobel Prize for their neurological findings. He also was a humanitarian and educator; Golgi was an outstanding hospital physician, and a life senator for the University of Pavia. At this university he transformed an empty palazzo into the Institute of Comparative Anatomy and Physiology. Keywords: Camillo Golgi, neurohistology, Golgi apparatus
Introduction
From a humble beginning, Camillo Golgi was destined for science. He was born on July 7, 1843/44 in Conteno, Italy (Britannica 1997). His father practiced medicine in a mountain village in Lombardy (Mazzarello 1996). Golgi attended primary, middle, then medical school in Pavia, receiving is degree by the age of 22 (Mazzarello 1996). He started working for pathologists, Bizzozero and Mantegazza, in a small laboratory. He even converted his own apartment kitchen into a working laboratory while working as chief physician at a hospital in Abbiategrosso. Even though Golgi was a shy person, he fell in love and married Bizzozero’s 20-year-old niece Lina (Mazzarello 1996). His modest, yet educated background was just the right formula for a future of great discoveries.

The Legacy of Camillo Golgi for Modern Concepts of Brain Organization Gordon M. Shepherd Yale University School of Medicine, Section of Neurobiology, New Haven, USA The experimental advance made by Camillo Golgi's `black reaction' has been universally recognized as the start of the modern revolution in the study of the nervous system. By contrast, his concepts of nervous organization, particularly his support for the idea of a `nervous reticulum', have been universally rejected. The premise of the present paper is that the ideas of a biologist of this stature deserve re-examination. Golgi's arguments for considering the holistic function of the brain seem to come from his experience as a physician, and presage the views of the gestaltists and, more recently, the conceptual underpinnings of artificial neural networks. His interest in the possible nutritional roles of neuronal dendrites can be seen to anticipate current investigations, at the cellular level, of the metabolic basis of brain imaging. These and other currents in Golgi's thought deserve further study.

Camillo Golgi: A Clinical Pathologist Giorgio Macchi Catholic University, Institute of Neurology, Rome, Italy Camillo Golgi opened new avenues in histology and neurobiology as well as in clinical neurology and internal medicine. This is demonstrated by investigations Golgi performed during 1861-1876 on the etiology and pathology of mental diseases, on the neuropathology of Huntington's chorea (Golgi provided the first detailed description at the microscopic level of pathological changes in the basal ganglia and cerebral cortex of one case of chorea), on meningiomas and cerebral gliomas. In the period following these investigations, Golgi focused especially on infectious diseases. He pursued fundamental studies on malaria (which remain among the most important and original of his contributions) on rabies, as well as on smallpox and influenza. Thus, Camillo Golgi should be remembered for his discoveries of the black reaction and the Golgi apparatus, as well as for the modern impulse he was able to give to clinical neurology and internal medicine.
