Biographical Sketch and Scientific Work
Camillo Golgi was born in July 1843 in Corteno, a village in the mountains near Brescia in northern Italy, where his father was working as a district medical officer. He studied medicine at the University of Pavia , where he attended as an 'intern student' the Institute of Psychiatry directed by Cesare Lombroso (1835-1909). Golgi also worked in the laboratory of experimental pathology directed by Giulio Bizzozero (1846-1901), a brilliant young professor of histology and pathology (among his several contributions, Bizzozero discovered the hemopoietic properties of bone marrow). Bizzozero introduced Golgi to experimental research and histological techniques, and established with him a lifelong friendship. Golgi graduated in 1865 and was, therefore, a student during the last years of the fights for the independence of Italy (Italy became a united nation in 1870).
Standing left to right: Bizzozero, Golgi (here in his late fifties). Golgi started his scientific career in 1869, with an article in which, influenced by Lombroso's theories, he stated that mental diseases could be due to organic lesions of the neural centers. However, convinced that theories had to be supported by facts, Golgi soon abandoned psychiatry and concentrated on the experimental study of the structure of the nervous system. Histological techniques, such as fixation procedures and tissue stainings (hematoxylin or carmine) had been introduced in the middle of the 19

DR. CAMILLO GOLGI
Born in Corteno (Brescia), Italy, Golgi received his education at PAVIA (Italy) and then became assistant to the great Cesar Lombroso at the Institute di Patologia Generale. His work on pellagra early and psammomas later brought him great recognition but the development of the Golgi method to stain neuroglia achieved for him permanent fame. His studies on gliomas were monumental. Together with Santiago Ramon of Cajal (1852-1934) when he even denunciated, they jointly received the Nobel Prize in 1906. Return to the index

Golgi, Camillo
Golgi, 1906 By courtesy of the Wellcome Trustees (b. July 7, 1843/44, Corteno, Italyd. Jan. 21, 1926, Pavia), Italian physician and cytologist whose investigations into the fine structure of the nervous system earned him (with the Spanish histologist ) the 1906 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine After his arrival at the University of Pavia (1876), Golgi found and described (1880) the point (now known as the Golgi tendon spindle or Golgi tendon organ) at which sensory nerve fibres end in rich branchings encapsulated within a tendon. He also discovered (1883) the presence in nerve cells of an irregular network of fibrils (small fibres), vesicles (cavities), and granules, now known as the Golgi complex or Golgi apparatus. The Golgi complex is found in all cells except bacteria and plays an important role in the modification and transport of proteins within the cell. Turning to the study of malaria (1885-93), Golgi found that the two types of intermittent malarial fevers (tertian, occurring every other day, and quartan, occurring every third day) are caused by different species of the protozoan parasite Plasmodium and that the paroxysms of fever coincide with release of the parasite's spores from red blood cells.

    Golgi, Camillo
Italian cell biologist who produced the first detailed knowledge of the fine structure of the nervous system. He shared the 1906 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with , who followed up Golgi's work.
Golgi's use of silver salts in staining cells proved so effective in showing up the components and fine processes of nerve cells that even the synapses - tiny gaps between the cells - were visible. The Golgi apparatus, a series of flattened membranous cavities found in the cytoplasm of cells, was first described by him in 1898.
Golgi was born near Brescia and studied at Pavia, where he spent most of his academic career, becoming professor 1876. He was elected to the senate 1900.
From his examinations of different parts of the brain, Golgi put forward the theory that there are two types of nerve cells, sensory and motor cells, and that axons are concerned with the transmission of nerve impulses. He discovered tension receptors in the tendons - now called the organs of Golgi.
Between 1885 and 1893 Golgi investigated malaria. This was known to be caused by the protozoon Plasmodium, and Golgi showed how the fever attacks coincide with the release into the bloodstream of a new generation of the parasites. He also established a method of treatment.

    Golgi, Camillo
