SIOP Foundation Celebrates Charter Year in New Orleans
The SIOP Foundation celebrated the charter year of their first campaign by honoring our contributors at the desert reception at SIOP's annual meeting in New Orleans. At the reception, a brochure was presented listing more than 130 contributors to the foundation who as a group gave a total of over $480,000. The list of contributors is presented below. We owe everyone a warm round of applause and thanks. Every contribution, large and small, is important to the future of SIOP. Our contributions are placed in an endowment which grows and gives us the opportunity to help our membership in the pursuit of its goals. Please remember to keep giving to help promote activities which will benefit both the practice and science of I-O psychology. Your contributions are tax deductible. Please contact the SIOP Administrative Office for further information on how to make a contribution. During this summer, we will be publishing our first annual report of the activities of the foundation and we will be sending everyone a copy. Also, the Foundation Committee will be meeting this summer to consider funding various proposals that will benefit our membership. We look forward to receiving any ideas you have. Many thanks to all of our contributors. They are listed below.

This article is adapted from a lecture presented by Joseph L Goldstein at the 1999 Joint Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians in Chicago, Illinois, USA on April 25, 1999. The George M. Kober Medal, the Association of American Physician's highest honor, has been awarded annually since 1924 to a member of the Association who has made outstanding contributions to the "progress and achievement of the medical sciences." Jean D. Wilson is a born naturalist. He has devoted most of his 45-year career in the medical sciences to understanding sexual differentiation in humans - not to mention dogs, cats, lions, bulls, rabbits, rats, niice, ducks, roosters, opossums, kangaroos, and spotted hyenas. His inspiration came from the greatest naturalist of all time, Charles Darwin. But how is Jean D. Wilson linked to Charles Darwin? THE CHAIN FROM WILSON TO DARWIN: "SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION"

PRESENTATION OF SPEAKERS
Peter C. Agre is Professor of Biological Chemistry and Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Agre's early research led to the first known membrane defects in congenital hemolytic anemias and produced the first isolation of the Rh blood group antigens. In 1991, Agre's laboratory became well known for discovering AQP1 and several other aquaporin water channel proteins, a breakthrough that provided the molecular explanation for epithelial fluid transport. The Agre laboratory achieved the first identification, expression, purification, and reconstitution of a water channel protein (AQP1). Their studies have yielded the atomic structural model for AQP1 which elucidated its high water selectivity. Agre and his co-workers have also identified humans with disruptions of the gene and defined the phenotypic loss of a blood group antigen, inability to concentrate urine, and defective capillary permeability. These studies led to the identification of ten additional mammalian aquaporins, each with unique tissue distributions and human disease phenotypes ranging from cataracts to diabetes insipidus. Animal studies are now linking aquaporins to multiple clinical disorders including fluid retention in congestive heart failure and pregnancy and brain edema. David Botstein Michael Brown Linda Buck is Professor of Neurobiology at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Harvard Medical School. She studies the mechanisms underlying smell and taste perception. Buck and her colleagues discovered the olfactory receptor family, which detects odorants in the nose. They also discovered receptors in the mouth for bitter and sweet taste compounds as well as a family of potential pheromone receptors. Buck and her coworkers found that olfactory receptors are used in a combinatorial fashion to detect, and encode the identities of, a vast number of odor chemicals. Their experiments have also revealed how the combinatorial receptor codes are represented in different parts of the nervous system, where they are ultimately translated into diverse odor perceptions.

Goldstein Delivers 3rd Annual Lerner Lecture
Nobel Laureate Joseph L. Goldstein, M.D., delivered the Third Annual Lerner Lecture in Bunts Auditorium. Dr. Goldstein addressed SREBPs: Activators of Lipid Synthesis and Monitors of Membrane Production Dr. Goldstein's recent research interests focus on Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Proteins (SREBPs) and the mechanism by which they regulate cholesterol metabolism at the molecular, cellular and whole body levels. SREBPs are membrane-bound basic/helix-loop-helix/leucine zipper (bHLH-Zip) transcription factors that regulate the synthesis and uptake of cholesterol and fatty acids in animal cells. Dr. Goldstein has detailed the activity of two SREBPs regulated by cellular sterol content. His address will delineate the feedback mechanism governing SREBP activity and the role of SREBPs in assuring steady-state supply and the prevention of overaccumulation of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids. SREBPs appear to be the key molecules in the pathway controlling lipid composition of cell membranes. In a joint award shared with his long-time friend and research partner Michael S. Brown, M.D., Dr. Goldstein received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1985 for discoveries of the regulation of cholesterol metabolism. After receiving the Nobel Prize, the researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center credited scientists from a diverse array of disciplines who participated in key experiments in genetics, cell biology, molecular pharmacology, electron microscopy, nuclear medicine, immunology, surgery and medicine. Drs. Goldstein and Brown developed a model for integrating multi-disciplinary approaches to unravel the mysteries of human biology, pathologies and molecular medicine.
