Joseph L. Goldstein was born on April 18, 1940, in Sumter, South Carolina, the only son of Isadore E. and Fannie Alpert Goldstein. The family owned and operated a clothing store in Kingstree, South Carolina, a town of 5000 people. After his education in the primary and secondary public schools of Kingstree, Goldstein attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and received the B.S. degree in chemistry, summa cum laude , in 1962. He then attended Southwestern Medical School of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas where he was inspired to pursue a career in academic medicine by Donald W. Seldin, then and now Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine. During his last year in medical school, Seldin offered Goldstein a future faculty position if he would become trained in genetics and return to Dallas to establish a division of medical genetics in the Department of Internal Medicine. After receiving the M.D. degree in 1966, Goldstein moved to Boston where he was an Intern and Resident in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (1966-68).It was at the Massachusetts General Hospital that Goldstein first met and developed a friendship with

Joseph L. Goldstein Is Elected HHMI Trustee
Joseph L. Goldstein (top); Craig B. Thompson Joseph L. Goldstein, a noted scientist who shared the 1985 Nobel Prize for discoveries related to cholesterol metabolism, has been elected a Trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He will become one of 10 trustees of the Institute, a medical research organization with scientists throughout the United States and a grants program that supports science education and select international researchers. A leader in academic medicine, Goldstein has had an impact felt well beyond UT Southwestern and his specific area of research. As an outgrowth of his own experiences as a physician and a researcher, he has been an advocate for increasing support for physician-scientists who conduct patient-oriented research. With encouragement from Goldstein, HHMI recently conducted an investigator competition focused on identifying a dozen such researchers. In addition to winning the Nobel Prize, Goldstein and Brown have received some of the most prestigious scientific research awards. These include the Richard Lounsbery Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the Gairdner Foundation International Award, the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize and the Lasker Award. Both he and Brown also received the National Medal of Science.

FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS
The Four Noble Truths represent the core of
the teachings of the Buddha, and are as follows: The First Noble Truth
Unsatisfactoriness and suffering exist and
are universally experienced. The Second Noble Truth
Desire and attachment are the causes of
unsatisfactoriness and suffering. The Third Noble Truth
There is an end to unsatisfactoriness and suffering. The Fourth Noble Truth The end can be attained by journeying on the Noble Eightfold Path.
NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH
Right Understanding Right Thinking Right Speech Right Action Right Livelihood Right Effort Right Mindfulness Right Concentration 1. Right View See things as they truly are without delusions or distortions for all things change. Develop wisdom by knowing how things work, knowing oneself and others. 2. Right Intention Wholehearted resolution and dedication to overcoming the dislocation of self-centered craving through the development of loving kindness, empathy and compassion.

April 18, 1940, Sumter, S.C., U.S.), American molecular geneticist who, along with Michael S. Brown , was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their elucidation of the process of cholesterol metabolism in the human body. Goldstein received his B.S. degree from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., in 1962 and obtained his medical degree from the Southwestern Medical School of the University of Texas at Dallas in 1966. Goldstein became friends with Brown when they were both working as interns at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1966 to 1968. Goldstein then conducted research under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health from 1968 to 1972, studying genetically predisposing factors that caused the accumulation of blood cholesterol in people prone to heart attacks. He returned to teach at the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1972 and was there reunited with his colleague Brown. The two men then began a concerted study of the processes affecting the accumulation of cholesterol in the bloodstream. In the course of their research they discovered that low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are primary cholesterol-carrying particles, are withdrawn from the bloodstream into the body's cells by receptors on the cells' surface. The genetic absence of these LDL receptors was found to be the cause of familial hypercholesterolemia, a disorder in which the body's tissues are incapable of removing cholesterol from the bloodstream. The new understanding of the cell receptors' role in the regulation of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream spurred the successful use of drugs and the manipulation of diet in lowering blood cholesterol levels.
