  • Develop an explanation of why some critics feel that Golding's main themes are that there is no hope for mankind, or that evil is an inborn trait of mankind. Be sure to use examples from the book and describe your own ideas.
  • William Golding writes: "The theme (of Lord of the Flies) is an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature. The moral is that the shape of society must depend on the ethical mature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently logical or respectable." In a well constructed essay, discuss the statement this novel makes about this theme and whether you agree or disagree. Avoid plot summary. Instead deal with what different characters symbolize and the statement they make about individuals and their government. Be as specific as possible, and utilize introductory and concluding paragraphs.
  • Identify the most significant symbol in the novel and justify your choice.

This is the epic story of a voyage to Australia during the Napoleonic wars. Rites of passage is powerfully dramatic yet full of the finest character drawing, especially in its studies of a breezy young aristocrat and of a clergyman riven by religious and sexual emotion. Both men are profoundly changed by the voyage, and one seems to see the moods and morals of the 18th century give way to those of the 19th century before one's eyes.

Sir William Gerald Golding ) is an English novelist and poet and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature ) "for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today." Born on September 19 in Newquay Cornwall he was educated at Oxford University Brasenose College During World War II he served in the Royal Navy and was involved in the sinking of Germany 's mightiest battleship , the Bismarck . He participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day and at war's end went back to teaching and writing. Golding's often allegorical fiction makes broad use of allusions to classical literature mythology , and Christian symbolism . Although no distinct thread unites his novels and his technique varies, Golding deals principally with evil and emerges with what has been characterized as a kind of dark optimism. Golding's first novel, Lord of the Flies ; film, ), introduced one of the recurrent themes of his fictionthe conflict between humanity's innate barbarism and the civilizing influence of reason.

Golding was born in St. Columb Minor in Cornall, England on September 19, 1911, to Alec A. and Mildred Golding. After being educated at Marlborough Grammar School where his father was a teacher, he studied the sciences for two years at Brasenose College, Oxford until abandoning science in favor of English language and literature, particularly that of the Anglo-Saxon period. After graduating Oxford in 1935 he worked in a London settlement house and devoted his spare time to writing and acting in "very, very far-off-Broadway theater." In 1939 he began teaching philosophy and English at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury. At the onset of World War II he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 29 and was involved in several major conflicts including the sinking of the German battleship Bismark and, during the invasion of France in 1944, commanded a rocket-launching craft. At the close of the war he resumed teaching in Salisbury until 1961.

As part of the World War II Royal Navy, he saw the horrors of war , participating in the Normandy invasion "World War II was the turning point for me," he said. "I began to see what people were capable of doing. Anyone who moved through those years without understanding that man produces evil as a bee produces honey, must have been blind or wrong in the head."
