German physicist who shared one-half of the 1963 Nobel Prize for Physics with J. Hans D. Jensen of West Germany for their proposal of the shell nuclear model. (The other half of the prize was awarded to Eugene P. Wigner of the United States for unrelated work.)
In 1930 Goeppert received her Ph.D. from the University of Gottingen. She married the American chemical physicist Joseph E. Mayer and went with him to Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. In 1939 she went to Columbia University, where she worked on the separation of uranium isotopes for the atomic bomb project, and in 1945 to the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago. The great stability and abundance of nuclei that have a particular number of neutrons (such as 50, 82, or 126) and the same special number of protons was explained by Mayer in 1949 in terms of the shell nuclear model. This model explained the detailed properties of atomic nuclei in terms of a structure of shells occupied by the protons and neutrons. She and Jensen jointly wrote Elementary Theory of Nuclear Shell Structure (1955).

While lecturing at such prestigious universities as Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and Chicago, Goeppert Mayer published numerous papers on quantum mechanics and chemical physics, and collaborated on a landmark textbook with her husband, the physicist Joseph Mayer. Despite her accomplishments, anti-nepotism rules forbade her from receiving an official appointmentonly Joseph was employed, and for thirty years she taught university physics as an unpaid volunteer.
In 1959, four years before receiving the Nobel Prize for her work on the structure of atomic nuclei, she was finally offered a paid, full-time position by the University of California at San Diego. An avid chain smoker, Goeppert Mayer is perhaps best remembered by students for her ability to continually exchange cigarette and chalk between hands while lecturing without ever confusing the two.

First Woman to Win Nobel Prize for Theoretical Physics
    • Born June 28, 1906, in Kattowitz, Germany (now Poland). Only child of Friedrich Goeppert, a professor, and Maria Wolff, a school teacher. In 1910 moved to Gottingen, Germany, and attended a public elementary school there. In 1921 attended Frauenstudium, a private girls school which prepared them for Gottingen University. 1924 entered Gottingen University as a math major, but changed to physics in 1927. In 1930 she received her Ph.D. in physics. There she met Joseph Mayer, an American student at the university, married in 1930, and moved to United States.
    University Involvement and Careers
    • Both Maria and Joe worked at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, but Maria had to work as a voluntary associate. 1939 Joe became associate professor of Chemistry at Columbia and again, Maria was a voluntary lecturer.

Maria Goeppert Mayer physicist Born: Birthplace: Katowice (then Germany, now Poland) An accomplished physicist, Goeppert-Mayer made numerous contributions to the field of physics and was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for theoretical physics. Educated at the University of Goettingen, Germany, Mayer was initially attracted to math, but later shifted to physics. After her marriage in 1930, she left Germany for Johns Hopkins University, where her husband, Joseph E. Mayer, taught in the chemistry department. She received an assistantship in the physics department at Johns Hopkins. For most of her career, nepotism rules at universities where her husband worked prevented Meyer from holding full-time positions. During WWII, she worked on the Manhattan Project. In 1946, the Mayers moved to Chicago where, as a senior physicist at the newly formed Argonne National Laboratory, her interests turned to nuclear physics. She collaborated with Hans D. Jensen to publish Elementary Theory of Nuclear Shell Structure in 1955. In 1963, she and Jensen shared the Nobel Prize for their groundbreaking work in models of the nucleus of atoms. In 1960, the Mayers moved to the University of California, San Diego, where she was appointed professor of physics, her first full-time paid position.

    Maria Goeppert Mayer
