Maria Goeppert-Mayer, the Nuclear Shell Model, and Magic Numbers
While working at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in 1948, physicist Maria Goeppert-Mayer developed the explanation of how neutrons and protons within atomic nuclei are structured. Called the "nuclear shell model," her work explains why the nuclei of some atoms are more stable than others and why some elements have many different atomic forms, called "isotopes," while others do not. For this work, she shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in physics Goeppert-Mayer was only the second woman to receive the Nobel Prize in physics, following Marie Curie, and only the fourth American woman to win a Nobel Prize. At Argonne, Goeppert-Mayer learned most of her nuclear theory and set up a system of "magic" numbers to represent the numbers of protons and neutrons arranged in shells in the atom's nucleus. While collecting data to support her nuclear-shell model, she was at first unable to marshal a theoretical explanation. During a discussion of the problem with [Enrico] Fermi , he casually asked: "Incidentally, is there any evidence of spin-orbit coupling?"

    Biography
Maria Goeppert Mayer physicist Born: Birthplace: Katowice (then Germany, now Poland) An accomplished physicist, Goeppert-Mayer made numerous contributions to the field of physics and was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for theoretical physics. Educated at the University of Goettingen, Germany, Mayer was initially attracted to math, but later shifted to physics. After her marriage in 1930, she left Germany for Johns Hopkins University, where her husband, Joseph E. Mayer, taught in the chemistry department. She received an assistantship in the physics department at Johns Hopkins. For most of her career, nepotism rules at universities where her husband worked prevented Meyer from holding full-time positions. During WWII, she worked on the Manhattan Project. In 1946, the Mayers moved to Chicago where, as a senior physicist at the newly formed Argonne National Laboratory, her interests turned to nuclear physics. She collaborated with Hans D. Jensen to publish Elementary Theory of Nuclear Shell Structure in 1955. In 1963, she and Jensen shared the Nobel Prize for their groundbreaking work in models of the nucleus of atoms. In 1960, the Mayers moved to the University of California, San Diego, where she was appointed professor of physics, her first full-time paid position.

Maria Goeppert-Mayer Physiscist Nobel Laureate (1906-1972) She married Joseph Edward Mayer, an American working with James Franck, a Nobel Prize winner, who was on her doctoral committee. After her marriage they moved to Baltimore. At first, she did not find employment as a physicist. She worked as a German correspondent for a physicist. However, she was allowed to do her own research. Together with her husband, she wrote a text book on "Statistical Mechanics" in 1938, and stood up for her Jewish colleagues, who were forced to emigrate from Germany. After the U.S. joined the war, she was included in the building of nuclear bombs, although she was against its actual use and for peaceful use of nuclear energy. She eventually became a professor in the Physics Department and in the Institute for Nuclear Studies in Chicago in 1946. In 1960, she moved to La Jolla, California, where she was a professor of physics and continued research of your own. In 1950, she published her theories, and together with a like-minded colleague from Heidelberg, she wrote a book on the synthesis of atoms, for which they received the Nobel-Prize in Physical Science in 1963.

Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award
Purpose:
To recognize and enhance outstanding achievement by a woman physicist in the early years of her career, and to provide opportunities for her to present these achievements to others through public lectures in the spirit of Maria Goeppert-Mayer Nature:
The award consists of $2,500 plus a $4,000 travel allowance to provide opportunities for the recipient to give lectures in her field of physics at four institutions and at the meeting of the Society at which the award is bestowed and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient. The award will be presented annually.
The award was established through sponsorship in 1985 by the General Electric Foundation (now the GE Fund
This award is to be given to a woman during the early years of her career, not later than ten years after the granting of the Ph.D. degree for scientific achievements that demonstrate her potential as an outstanding physicist. The award is open to any female physicist having US citizenship or is a permanent US resident. The lectures must be given at institutions within the United States or its posessions within two years after the award is made. Nominations are active for three years. The nominee's Ph.D must have been received during the ten-year period prior to the nomination deadline.
