Goeppert-Mayer, Maria (born Goeppert)
German-born US physicist who studied the structure of the atomic nucleus. Her explanation of the stability of particular atoms 1948 envisaged atomic nuclei as shell-like layers of protons and neutrons, with the most stable atoms having completely filled outermost shells. She shared the 1963 Nobel Prize for Physics with Eugene Wigner and Hans Jensen
In 1945, Goeppert-Mayer developed a 'little bang' theory of cosmic origin with US physicist Edward Teller to explain element and isotope abundances in the universe. This led her to study the stability of nuclei. In 1948, she published evidence of the special stability of the following numbers of protons and neutrons: 2, 8, 20, 50, 82 and 126. These are commonly called magic numbers.
She and Jensen independently proposed a shell model, and in 1955 they wrote a book together, Elementary Theory of Nuclear Shell Structure.

Maria Goeppert Mayer was born June 28, 1906, Katowice in 1924 to study mathematics and received her doctorate in theoretical physics in 1930, under the tutelage of Max Born . After her marriage in 1930, Mayer left Germany for Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where her husband, Joseph E. Mayer , taught in the chemistry department and she received an assistantship in the physics department. During most of her career, nepotism rules at universities where her husband worked prevented Mayer from holding full-time positions. After a move to New York, Mayer landed her first paid position in 1941, a half-time teaching post at Sarah Lawrence College . During World War II, she worked with Harold Urey on separating U-235 from natural uranium. In 1946, the Mayers moved to Chicago, where Maria worked as an unsalaried associate professor of physics at the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago . She became a consultant to the Metallurgical Laboratory and then a senior physicist at the newly formed Argonne National Laboratory At Argonne, Mayer's interests turned to nuclear physics, and

    Physics, Mathematics, Nobel Prize Winners
    A mathematician and physicist, Maria Goeppert Mayer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 for her work on the nuclear shell structure. Maria Göppert was born in 1906 in Kattowitz, then in Germany (now Katowice, Poland). Her father became a professor of pediatrics at the University at Göttingen, and her mother was a former music teacher known for her entertaining parties for faculty members. With her parents support, Maria Göppert studied mathematics and science, preparing for a university education. But there were no public schools for girls to prepare for this venture, so she enrolled in a private school. The disruption of World War I and the post-war years made study difficult and closed the private school. A year short of finishing, Göppert nevertheless passed her entrance exams and entered in 1924. The only woman teaching at the university did so without a salary a situation with which Göppert would become familiar in her own career.

    Fundamental achievements in one area of science may cross boundaries of all technical fields and reside in the realm of interdisciplinary research. Such were the achievements of Maria Goeppert-Mayer, a University of California, San Diego, Nobel Prize-winning scholar. The Maria Goeppert-Mayer Annual Interdisciplinary Symposium was established in 1996 by Kim Baldridge, adjunct full professor of theoretical chemistry with the University of California, San Diego, and associate director of integrative biosciences with the San Diego Supercomputer Center.     Name des Programms Das Programm ist zu Ehren der aus Göttingen stammenden Physik-Nobelpreisträgerin Maria Goeppert Mayer (1906–1972) benannt. Sie studierte Mathematik und Physik an der Universität Göttingen und promovierte bei Max Born. Anfang der 30er Jahre siedelte sie mit ihrem Mann, dem Chemiker Joe Mayer, in die USA über. 1963 wurde ihr der Nobelpreis für ihre herausragende Arbeit in der theoretischen Physik zu "Kernkonfigurationen nach dem Spin-Bahn-Kopplungsmodell" verliehen.     Maria Goeppert-Mayer born June 28, 1906, died February 20, 1972 When Polish-born physicist Maria Goeppert-Mayer won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1963 (shared with J.H.D.
