Walter Gilbert: Genome Provides Parts List

Walter Gilbert
Carl M. Loeb Professor, Harvard University
Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry The earlier feeling that just the genome would explain everything was misguided. Now, it’s broadly realized that the genome provides us with the parts list, and the interpretation of what those genes do depends on understanding other processes, such as protein-protein interactions. This is important because we now recognize that a lot of intercellular signaling is between proteins themselves, rather than just between proteins and small molecules. For example, we found that if you put a phosphate on tyrosine (a well-known signaling process), another protein binds there. The study of this kind of signaling has expanded greatly over the last five to ten years. Personally, I’m delighted with the progress that’s been made in genomics. Back in the ’80s, I thought it would take many decades to get a reference genome, and I never expected the genome would immediately answer the most important questions. It would provide a vital stimulus to all of biological research, however. And there has been tremendous growth in the number of ways to identify relevant genes and their connections “The biggest surprise is RNAi. Clearly, RNA is doing more things around the cell than we are yet aware of.”

Gilbert, Walter
US molecular biologist who studied genetic control, seeking the mechanisms that switch genes on and off. By 1966 he had established the existence of the lac repressor, a molecule that suppresses lactose production. Further work on the sequencing of DNA nucleotides won him a share of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, with Frederick Sanger and Paul Berg
Gilbert was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and educated as a physicist at Harvard and at Cambridge, England. In 1960 he changed to biology, becoming professor of biophysics at Harvard 1964, then professor of molecular biology 1969.
Gilbert began in 1965 his attempt to identify repressor substances involved in the regulation of gene activity. He devised a technique called equilibrium dialysis that enabled him to produce relatively large quantities of the repressor substance, which he then isolated and purified, and by late 1966 he had identified it as a large protein molecule. Gilbert then developed a method of determining the sequence of bases in DNA, which involved using an enzyme that breaks the DNA molecule at specific, known points.

http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/G/GilbertW/1.htm
Gilbert, Walter
English scientist who studied magnetism and static electricity, deducing that the Earth's magnetic field behaves as if a bar magnet joined the North and South poles. His book on magnets, published 1600, is the first printed scientific book based wholly on experimentation and observation.
Gilbert was the first English scientist to accept Nicolas Copernicus' idea that the Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the Sun. He also believed that the stars are at different distances from the Earth and might be orbited by habitable planets, but erroneously thought that the planets were held in their orbits by magnetic forces.
Gilbert was born in Colchester, Essex, and educated at Cambridge. In about 1573, he settled in London, where he established a medical practice. He was appointed physician to Queen Elizabeth I 1600 and later briefly to James I.
Gilbert discovered many important facts about magnetism, such as the laws of attraction and repulsion and magnetic dip. He also investigated static electricity and differentiated between magnetic attraction and electric attraction (as he called the ability of an electrostatically charged body to attract light objects). This is described in his book De magnete, magneticisque corporibus, et de magno magnete tellure/Concerning Magnetism, Magnetic Bodies, and the Great Magnet Earth 1600.

Walter Bond Gilbert
GILBERT, Walter Bond, musician, born in Exeter, England, 21 April, 1829. He gave early evidence of musical talent, and when quite young was placed under Mr. Angel, organist of Exeter cathedral, as an articled pupil for five years, after which he studied the organ under Dr. Wesley, of Winchester, and orchestration under Sir Henry Bishop. He took the degree of bachelor in music at Oxford in 1854, became fellow of the College of organists in 1868, and in 1886 received the honorary degree of doctor in music from Trinity College, Toronto, Canada. In 1869 he was appointed organist of Trinity chapel, New York, which place he still (1887) holds. His compositions and publications are numerous, and include two oratorios, "St. John " and "The Restoration of Israel." TM
