We analyze the three-dimensional structure of proteins by a computer program that finds sets of module boundaries, defining a module as a region of polypeptide chain bounded in space by a sphere of specified diameter. These boundaries define a set of linker regions, which have the property that if an intron were to be placed in each linker region, the protein would be dissected into a set of modules all less than a specified size. A set of 28 proteins and a corresponding set of 579 introns shows a statistically significant excess of introns in the linker regions. For 28 A modules, a standard size used in many discussions, there is such an excess with p <1%. Over a range of module sizes there are significant correlations at module sizes near 14, 21, 28, and 33 A. The correlations near 28 and 33 A have p <0.1%. This set of module sizes corresponds to average exon sizes of 8, 16, 24, and 32 residues. Thus there is a significant correlation between introns, modules, and a quantized pattern of lengths of polypeptide chain, which is the prediction of the "Exon Theory of Genes."

I was born on March 21, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts. My father, Richard V. Gilbert, an economist, was at that time at Harvard University . He worked for the Office of Price Administration during the second World War and later headed up a planning group advising the Pakistani government. My mother, Emma Cohen, was a child psychologist, who practiced giving intelligence tests to me and my younger sister. She educated us at home for the first few years, to keep my sister and me amused. We loved reading and raided the adult section of the public library. In 1939 my family moved to Washington D.C.; I was educated there in public schools, later at the Sidwell Friends high school.
I always had an interest in science, in those years minerology and astronomy (I was a member of a minerological society and an astronomical society as a child). I became interested in inorganic chemistry at high school. In my last year in high school, 1949, I was fascinated by nuclear physics and would skip school for long periods to go down to the Library of Congress to read about Van de Graaf generators and simple atom smashers. I went to Harvard and majored in chemistry and physics. I became interested in theoretical physics and, as a graduate student, worked in the theory of elementary particles, the quantum theory of fields. I spent my first graduate year at Harvard, then went to the

Gilbert, Walter
(b. March 21, 1932, Boston, Mass., U.S.), American molecular biologist who was awarded a share (with Paul Berg and Frederick Sanger ) of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1980 for his development of a method for determining the sequence of nucleotide links in the chainlike molecules of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Gilbert graduated from Harvard University with a degree in physics in 1953 and took a Ph.D. in mathematics from Cambridge University in 1957. He joined the Harvard faculty as a lecturer in physics in 1958 and, as his interests changed, advanced to assistant professor of physics in 1959, associate professor of biophysics in 1964, and professor of biochemistry in 1968. In 1972 he became American Cancer Society professor of molecular biology at Harvard. Escherichia coli that prevents a gene from manufacturing a certain enzyme except when lactose is present. In the 1970s Gilbert developed a widely used technique of using gel electrophoresis to read the nucleotide sequences of DNA segments. The same method was developed independently by Sanger. In 1979 Gilbert, while retaining his affiliation with Harvard, joined a group of other scientists and businessmen to form Biogen, a commercial genetic-engineering research corporation. Gilbert resigned from Biogen in 1984 and, while continuing to teach at Harvard, became a chief proponent of the Human Genome Project, a government-funded effort to compile a complete map of the gene sequences in human DNA.

Walter Gilbert (1932 - )
Susan Wiegand While the world at large admires the work of excellent scientists, those whom the scientists themselves revere is something else entirely. Walter Gilbert is among that select group. Born in 1932 in Boston, Gilbert has rarely strayed from that intellectual and scientific nest. The first time was at the age of seven when his father, an economist who had taught at Harvard for the first years of the boy's life, took a job with a Washington D.C. brain trust for the duration of World War II. Already showing the makings of a scientist, Gilbert ground mirrors for his own telescopes and joined his first science society, a group of adult amateur geologists. It was also while living in suburban Virginia that the twelve-year-old executed his first dramatically failed chemical experiment, causing an explosion, which resulted in a slashed wrist from flying glass and a trip to the hospital. His mother, a child psychologist, remembers that as they approached the hospital, Walter offered his first commentary on the event: "I know what I did wrong," he brightened, the physical pain subdued by stubborn curiosity. School frequently bored Gilbert, and he did not regularly visit the Quaker institution where his parents had installed him. But unflagging enthusiasm for scientific inquiry - even in the face of explosions and bloodshed - remained with Gilbert and followed him to Harvard University in 1950. There he studied chemistry and physics in the company of great scientists, who all seemed destined for some Nobel appreciation. After graduating, Gilbert went to Cambridge University, England, where he pursued his Ph.D. in physics. It was there that he made the acquaintance of another young American

30. Walter Gilbert Genealogy: Luther Calvin
Luther Calvin was born in England or Germany in 170510, and died probably before 1778. He had six children, likely born in Bethlehem Twp., Hunterdon County.
http://www.otal.umd.edu/~walt/gen/htmfile/136.htm
Luther Calvin was born in England or Germany in 1705-1710, and died before 1778. These birth and death dates are estimates. His wife was They had six children: i. ii. Joshua Calvin [#68]: He was born in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on September 14, 1742, and died in Mahoning County, Ohio, on October 4, 1832. iii.
Luther stayed in New Jersey and built a grist and saw mill (Calvin's Mills) in what is now Union Township. He sold out in 1812 and it became known as Pattenburg (N.J.). iv. v.
He was the first of the sons to leave New Jersey. He moved to the Romney region of Hampshire County, [now West] Virginia. He acquired 276 acres there on March 25, 1780. He deeded his land to Stephen Calvin (his son?) in 1815. That was the last record of Robert. vi. Luther Calvin was a Huguenot who immigrated from England about 1725. According to Mrs. Grace (Calvin) Taylor, one of his great granddaughters, "... came from England and bought land in [what became] Frenchtown and a hotel on the Everittstown Road..." Both of these places are in Hunterdon County. In Hunterdon County History , by Snell, it is stated that the Frenchtown locality was known in 1759 as Calvin's Ferry and that a road lead from there to Everettstown. The inference is clear that this name came from Luther Calvin and that he had established a ferry across the Delaware River there, 24 miles up river from Washington's famous crossing.

Celebrity Fashion:
How It All Started
Celebrity fashion. Why are we so fascinated by the subject? Whether we admit it or not, there's no denying the fact that we like to see how famous people dress. As the summer movie season gets in to full gear, it's as great a time as any to look at one of most-requested topics I get: celebrity fashion. How Motion Pictures Changed Everything The first movies lasted only minutes and had no sound. Nonetheless, they created a sensation. By 1910, the Eastman Company had perfected the technology of fashioning and developing vast lengths of film. Within a matter of years, going to the movies on Saturday was a part of our culture. 1916 marked the emergence of costume design in cinema. Up until that time, film actors usually supplied their own clothes, if the story was contemporary, or directors rented outfits from costume companies, if the film was a period piece. But Parisian-born director Louis J. Gasnier had a particular "look" in mind when he was working on a movie with serial queen Pearl White. He summoned a tailor and had him assemble an outfit for the actress consisting of a black suit, white blouse, loose tie, and velour beret. The result? Secretaries of the day made this ensemble standard business dress-which it still is, in varying degrees. It was the first emergence of Hollywood celebrity fashion.
