Sergeant Gilbert Walter Candy
Gilbert Candy was born on August 20th, 1889 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his parents having gone there to establish that country's first cheddar cheese factory. When they returned to England, Gilbert attended Oxford Central High School. In 1911 at the age of 22 he went to Alberta where he said he was going to earn his fortune.
Gilbert joined The Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry on August 4th, 1914, the day war broke out. He was inducted by August 12th, and by August 19th 1,098 of those who applied were chosen. All but 49 of them had previous military training, Gilbert with the 15th Light Horse. Within days Gilbert was shipped to Landsdowne Park, Ottawa where The Patricias were clothed and equipped in time for the church parade on August 23rd, when The Patricias received their colours from Princess Patricia, the daughter of the Gov. General, the Duke of Connaught. After initial training The Patricias left Ottawa in late August for Levis, Quebec.
After further training in Levis, Gilbert set sail on October 4th to England on the SS Royal George, arriving in Plymouth on October 18th for further training on the Salisbury Plain. Gilbert and The Patricias sailed for France on December 20th arriving in the Ypres Salient in Belgium where they entered the lines as part of the British 80th Brigade and suffered their first casualties in the water soaked cold muddy trenches at Vierstraat. After relief on January 8th, 1915 they were back in the trenches at St. Eloi, arriving on January 30th. Their trenches were in a marshy meadow where they fought in cold muddy water at thigh level surrounded by rotting corpses. This led Gilbert to be hospitalized for the next 16 days beginning February 26th, 1915 with rheumatic fever.

Walter Gilbert (born March 21 ) is an American physicist biochemist , entrepreneur, and molecular biology pioneer. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Paul Berg and Frederick Sanger . Gilbert and Sanger were recognized for their pioneering work in devising methods for determining the sequence of nucleotides in a nucleic acid . Gilbert was one of the founders, and the first chairman of the board of directors, of the biotech start-up company Biogen He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and educated at Harvard University and the University of Cambridge , later joining the faculty at Harvard. His approach to the first synthesis of insulin lost out to Genentech's approach which used genes built up from the nucleotides rather than from natural sources. Walter Gilbert is currently the chairman of the Harvard Society of Fellows edit

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Walter Gilbert (born 1932) is an American physicist Physics physikos natural physis ): Nature) is the science of Nature in the broadest sense. Physicists study the behaviour and interactions of matter and radiation. The laws of physics are generally expressed as mathematical relations. Physics is very closely related to the other natural sciences, particularly chemistry, the science of molecules and the chemical compounds that they form in bulk. Chemistry draws on many fields of physics, particularly quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism. However, chemical phenomena are sufficiently varied and complex that chemistry is usually regarded as a separate discipline.

Biochemistry is focused on the structure and function of cellular components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules. Recently biochemistry has focused more specifically on the chemistry of enzyme-mediated reactions, and on the properties of proteins.

Walter Gilbert
American molecular biologist who was awarded a share (with Paul Berg and Frederick Sanger) of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1980 for his development of a method for determining the sequence of nucleotide links in the chainlike molecules of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA).
Gilbert graduated from Harvard University with a degree in physics in 1953 and took a Ph.D. in mathematics from Cambridge University in 1957. He joined the Harvard faculty as a lecturer in physics in 1958 and, as his interests changed, advanced to assistant professor of physics in 1959, associate professor of biophysics in 1964, and professor of biochemistry in 1968. In 1972 he became American Cancer Society professor of molecular biology at Harvard. In the late 1960s Gilbert confirmed the theory of Jacques Monod and Francois Jacob that "repressor proteins" control the genes responsible for beginning and ending protein synthesis in the cell. He was able to demonstrate the existence of a repressor in the bacterium Escherichia coli that prevents a gene from manufacturing a certain enzyme except when lactose is present. In the 1970s Gilbert developed a widely used technique of using gel electrophoresis to read the nucleotide sequences of DNA segments. The same method was developed independently by Sanger.

He attended New College, Oxford (B.Mus. 1854, D.Mus., 1888) and the University of Toronto, Canada (DMus 1888). He served as organist in Devon at Topsham (1847) and Bideford (1849); in Kent at Tonbridge (1854), the Old Collegiate Church, Maidstone (1859) and Lee (1866); Boston, Lincolnshire (1868); and Trinity Chapel, New York (1869-1897). He taught at Tonbridge School, helped found the College of Organists, edited the American Episcopal Hymnal , and wrote a number of monographs including Antiquities of Maidstone . At age 17, he composed a Cathedral Service; he continued to write church music, producing services, oratorios (including The Restoration of Israel and St. John, 1857), organ works, and anthems.
