    Gell-Mann, Murray
July 1997 Dr. Gell-Mann is Professor and Co-Chairman of the Science Board at the Santa Fe Institute. He is also the Robert Andrews Millikan Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Technology. In 1969 he received the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. Gell-Mann's interests extend to historical linguistics, archeology, natural history and the conservation of biological diversity, and other subjects connected with biological and cultural evolution and with learning and thinking. Much of his recent research at the Santa Fe Institute has focused on the theory of complex adaptive systems, which brings many of those topics together. He is the author of The Quark and the Jaguar , published in 1994, in which he traces for the lay reader the chain of relationships linking the simple basic laws of physics to the complexities we see around us.

Yale 1948, Ph.D. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1951. In 1953, he and the Japanese team of T. Nakano and Kazuhiko Nishijima independently proposed the concept of strangeness to account for certain particle-decay patterns; strangeness became the foundation for later symmetry studies. In 1961, Gell-Mann and Israeli physicist Yuval Ne'eman independently introduced the eightfold way, or SU(3) symmetry, a tablelike ordering of all subatomic particles analogous to the ordering of the elements in the periodic table. The 1964 discovery of the omega-minus particle, which filled a gap in this ordering, brought the theory wide acceptance and led to Gell-Mann's being awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize for Physics. In 1963, Gell-Mann and American physicist George Zweig independently postulated the existence of the quark, an even more fundamental elementary particle with a fractional electric charge; quarks are confined in protons, neutrons, and other particles by forces associated with the exchange of

    Gell-Mann, Murray
Gell-mann zavedl v roce 1953 podivnost (kvantovou vlastnost mezonù a baryonù obsahujících s kvark).

THE MAKING OF A PHYSICIST : A TALK WITH MURRAY GELL-MANN I asked him, "What would you suggest?" He mentioned engineering, to which I replied, "I'd rather starve. If I designed anything it would fall apart." And sure enough when I took an aptitude test a year later I was advised to take up nearly anything but engineering. Then my father suggested, "Why don't we compromise — on physics?"

In 1951, at the age of 21, Murray Gell-Mann was a post-doc at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he often encountered Albert Einstein. "I could have spoken with him," Murray says, "but at that time I didn't like the kind of people who approached great figures, introduced themselves, got into conversation with them, and reported the experience to others, saying "I know Einstein," and so on. So I didn't approach him. Today, I would almost certainly behave differently, asking the old man about his thoughts years ago when he was carrying out the greatest physics research since Newton's. It would have been exciting. Instead, in 1951 I said "Good morning" occasionally and Einstein would answer with "Guten morning" or something of the kind, but that was it.

    Gell-Mann, Murray
    Born 1929
American physicist. He won a 1969 Nobel Prize for his study of subatomic particles. Gell-Mann, Murray Gell-Mann, Murray (1929- ), American physicist, noted for his classification of subatomic elementary particles and his proposal of the existence of quarks . Born in New York City, Gell-Mann was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in physics. In 1963 he and his colleague George Zweig independently advanced the quark theory; they hypothesized that quarks- particles carrying fractional electric charges- are the smallest particles of matter.
MURRAY GELL-MANN, "Today the network of relationships linking the human race to itself and to the rest of the biosphere is so complex that all aspects affect all others to an extraordinary degree. Someone should be studying the whole system, however crudely that has to be done, because no gluing together of partial studies of a complex nonlinear system can give a good idea of the behavoir of the whole."
Any of a group of hypothetical elementary particles having electric charges of magnitude one-third or two-thirds that of the electron, regarded as constituents of all hadrons.

Freeman and Company 1994 Octavo., xviii, 392 pp., Pictorial boards., Fine in printed acetate dust jacket. Signed by the author on the title-page. First edition., "In 1964 Gell-Mann proposed a model for yet a further level of complexity within the atom. He proposed that particles such as the proton are not themselves fundamental but are composed of quarks...Gell-Mann's work has been characterised by originality and bold synthesis. His models have been useful not only for their predictive value, but also for the work they have spurred others to do" (Hutchinson's DSB). The term "quark" is taken from Finnegans Wake. Gell-Mann won the 1969 Nobel Prize for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Michael R.
