Murray Gell-Mann, 1983 Kevin Fleming/Corbis (b. Sept. 15, 1929, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics for 1969 for his work pertaining to the classification of subatomic particles and their interactions. Having entered Yale University at the age of 15, Gell-Mann received his B.S. in physics in 1948 and his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. His doctoral research on subatomic particles was influential in the later work of the Nobel laureate (1963) Eugene P. Wigner. In 1952 Gell-Mann joined the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago. The following year he introduced the concept of "strangeness," a quantum property that accounted for previously puzzling decay patterns of certain mesons. As defined by Gell-Mann, strangeness is conserved when any subatomic particle interacts via the strong force i.e., the force that binds the components of the atomic nucleus. In 1961 Gell-Mann and Yuval Ne'eman, an Israeli theoretical physicist, independently proposed a scheme for classifying previously discovered strongly interacting particles into a simple, orderly arrangement of families. Called the Eightfold Way (after Buddha's Eightfold Path to Enlightenment and bliss), the scheme grouped mesons and baryons (

Is this the cleverest man in the world?
He won a Nobel prize, but since then his interests have widened. Now he's on a quest for a real Theory of Everything
Murray Gell-Mann has been described as The Man With Five Brains and it's not hard to understand why. He is an emeritus professor of physics, an international advisor on the environment, an authority on the origin of languages, arms control and foreign relations oh yes, and he has a Nobel prize for solving a key mystery of the universe.
Despite his sprite-like appearance, he also has a reputation for dealing with fools the way a killer whale deals with penguins. But then, it cannot be easy being The Man With Five Brains in a world with more than its fair share of Men With Half A Brain.
Pausing in London to talk to Focus about his new book on the science of (almost) everything, he pulls out a slip of paper he has been given in a major London bookstore. It shows that his book The Quark and the Jaguar has been classified under "Fiction - General", and the author as "Mann, M. Gell" .A review in the Sunday Times spells his name Gell-Man."
For someone who spends his time thinking about subjects most people cannot even spell, it must all be a bit wearing. But he has had time to get used to it: the fact is Gell-Mann has been a prodigy almost all his 65 years.

Murray Gell-Mann
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Murray Gell-Mann is a Distinguished Fellow of the Santa Fe Institute, and author of the popular science book, The Quark and the Jaguar, Adventures in the Simple and the Complex In 1969, Professor Gell-Mann received the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. Professor Gell-Mann's "eightfold way" theory brought order to the chaos created by the discovery of some 100 particles in the atom's nucleus. Then he found that all of those particles, including the neutron and proton, are composed of fundamental building blocks that he named "quarks." The quarks are permanently confined by forces coming from the exchange of "gluons." He and others later constructed the quantum field theory of quarks and gluons, called "quantum chromodynamics," which seems to account for all the nuclear particles and their strong interactions. Besides being a Nobel laureate, Professor Gell-Mann has received the Ernest O. Lawrence Memorial Award of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute, the Research Corporation Award, and the John J. Carty medal of the National Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from many institutions, including Yale University, the University of Chicago, the University of Turin, Italy, and Cambridge and Oxford Universities. In 1988 he was listed on the United Nations Environmental Program Roll of Honor for Environmental Achievement (the Global 500). He also shared the 1989 Erice "Science For Peace" Prize. In 1994 he received an honorary Doctorate of Natural Resources from the University of Florida.

Gell-Mann, Murray
US theoretical physicist. In 1964 he formulated the theory of the quark as one of the fundamental constituents of matter. In 1969 he was awarded a Nobel prize for his work on elementary particles and their interaction.
Gell-Mann proposed in 1962 a classification system for elementary particles called the eightfold way. It postulated the existence of supermultiplets, or groups of eight particles which have the same spin value but different values for charge, isotopic spin, mass, and strangeness. The model also predicted the existence of supermultiplets of different sizes.
Gell-Mann was born in New York and studied at Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became professor at the California Institute of Technology 1956.
Gell-Mann proposed in 1953 a new quantum number called the strangeness number, together with the law of conservation of strangeness, which states that the total strangeness must be conserved on both sides of an equation describing a strong or an electromagnetic interaction but not a weak interaction. This led to his theory of associated production 1955 concerning the creation of strange particles. Gell-Mann used these rules to group mesons, nucleons (neutrons and protons), and hyperons, and was thereby able to form successful predictions.
