    D.C. Gajdusek Foto: web Für seine Arbeiten über die Kuru-Krankheit, den lachenden Tod, erhielt er 1976 den Nobelpreis. Heute setzt er sich immer noch für die Aufklärung von Prion-Krankheiten wie BSE und vCJD ein.
    BERLIN. Bereits im zarten Alter von fünf Jahren erwachte das Interesse des kleinen Daniel Carleton für die Wissenschaft. Was wird wohl aus den seltsamen auf Zweigen gesammelten Gebilden werden? Bald bevölkerten Gottesanbeterinnen die Vorhänge des heimischen Wohnzimmers der Familie Gaijdusek. Auch heute ist der 1923 in einem New Yorker Vorort geborene Sohn eines slowakischen Metzgers und einer ungarischen Mutter aus einer Wissenschaftlerfamilie noch aktiv in der Forschung tätig. Nach einem bewegten Leben an verschiedenen renommierten Instituten in der ganzen Welt arbeitet der Virologe und Kinderarzt heute in Frankreich am Wissenschaftszentrum der CNRS in Gif.     Daniel Carleton Gajdusek (born September 9 Yonkers New York U.S.A ) is an American physician and medical researcher, who was the corecipient (along with Baruch Blumberg) of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976. He received the award in recognition of his study of a remarkable disease, Kuru (Fore word for "trembling"). This disease was rampant among the South Fore people of New Guinea in the 1950's and 1960's. Gajdusek correctly connected the prevalence of the disease with the practice of funerary cannibalism , practiced by the South Fore. With elimination of this practice, Kuru disappeared among the South Fore within a generation. Gajdusek graduated in 1943 from the University of Rochester New York ) , where he studies Physics Biology Chemistry and Mathematics . He obtained an M.D. from Harvard University in 1946. He performed postdoctoral research at both Caltech and Harvard before being drafted to complete military service at the Walter Reed Army Medical Service Graduate School as a research virologist .He held a position at the Institut Pasteur in Tehran from 1952 to 1953, where he was excited by the challenges "offered by urgent opportunistic investigations of epidemiological problems in exotic and isolated populations". In 1954 he went to work as a visiting investigator at the Walter and Eliza Institute of Medical Research in

Yonkers Yonkers , just north of New York City in Westchester County, is the fourth largest city in the U.S. state of New York, with a population of 196,086 (according to the 2000 census). A July 1, 2002 estimate showed the city's population to be 197,234. It is by far the largest city in Westchester County. Yonkers has four Metro-North Railroad stations providing commuter service to New York City: Ludlow, Yonkers, Glenwood and Greystone. The Yonkers station is also served by Amtrak. Interstate 87 runs through the city.
