The International Dennis Gabor Award The International Dennis Gabor Award was established in 1990 to recognize people under the age of 35 for research in modern optics. It honors Dennis Gabor, who received the Nobel Prize for the development of holography, and who always emphasized the necessity of understanding and cooperation among scientists of various nationalities. The award is issued every three years. The award medal, which has inset in it a hologram showing three images: a portrait of Dennis Gabor, an optical bench set up to record holograms, and a representation of hologram wavefields. The medal is about 12 cm diameter, 700 g mass. Bei der Preisverleihung wurde das Wirken und die Bedeutung von Hans Tiziani auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene auf diesen Gebieten hervorgehoben. Über viele Jahre arbeitet er in Spitzenpositionen internationaler Gesellschaften wie der SPIE und OSA mit. Fünf Jahre war er Präsident der European Electro-Optics. Danach übernahm er das Amt des Präsidenten der Optics Division of the European Physical Society. Von 1985 bis 1990 war er Governor (Direktor) der SPIE, eine für Europäer sehr seltene Auszeichnung. Er ist Fellow der SPIE und der Optical Society of America (OSA). Von 1991 bis 2000 war er Board Member der European Optical Society. Seit 1978 lehrt Prof. Tiziani an der Universität Stuttgart und leitet das Institut für Technische Optik, das unter seiner Leitung von fünf auf 35 Mitarbeiter angewachsen ist und zu fast 80 Prozent aus Drittmitteln finanziert ist. Dies unterstreicht die Bedeutung seiner Forschungen für die Wirtschaft und die industrielle Praxis. Als einer der ersten bearbeitete er neue Gebiete wie die Speckle-Interferometrie, die Holografie, die digitale Holografie, die zeitaufgelöste Speckle-Holografie und die Anwendung nichtlinearer Kristalle in der Holografie. Als ehemaliger Direktor des Zentrallabors der Firma Wild, Heerbrugg kennt er die Probleme der optischen Industrie genauestens. Deshalb waren ihm stets innovative Meßtechniken wichtig, die in der industriellen Qualitätskontolle optischer Oberflächen und optischer Systeme, in der Oberflächenanalyse und bei 3-D Messungen angewendet werden können.

Dennis Gabor The inventor of holography registered his first patent when still a young schoolboy. He started at the Joseph Technical University in Budapest, and finished his studies in Berlin. He completed his doctoral dissertation on the cathode ray tube in 1927, at which time he was employed by Siemens and Halske. Later on he worked in Britain. He was professor at the Imperial College of London between 1947 and 1958. The 1971 Nobel Prize for Physics was presented to Gabor “for discovering the method of holography and contributing to its development” . This principle serves as a basis for producing spatial three-dimensional images. In order to recognize outstanding professional achievements related to innovation in Hungary, the NOVOFER Foundation established the Dennis Gabor Award in 1989.
