Nobel Prize in 1971 for his investigation and development of holography.
What is Holography? Holography dates from 1947, when British/Hungarian scientist Dennis
Gabor developed the theory of holography while working to improve the
resolution of an electron microscope. Gabor, who characterized his work
as "an experiment in serendipity," coined the term hologram from the
Greek words holos, meaning "whole," and gramma, meaning "message." Further development in the field was stymied during the next decade because light sources available at the time were not truly "coherent" (monochromatic or one-color, from a single point, and of a single wavelength). This problem was solved in 1960 with the invention of the Laser. A laser

Dennis Gabor
was born in Hungary on 5 June 1900. He studied electrical engineering first in Budapest, later in Berlin, where he finished his academic education with the award of Dr. Ing. in 1927, with his Thesis on the Recording of Transients in Electric Circuits with the Cathode Ray Oscillograph In 1934 Gabor went to the British Thomson-Houston Co. Research Laboratory, Rugby, England, first on an inventor's agreement, later as a member of the research staff, and stayed there for 14 years. This was a fruitful epoch. The low-pressure gas discharge lamp with a positive characteristic, which could be operated on the mains like an incandescent lamp, with which he started his work, was not a success, as it had insufficient life, but he was luckier with other inventions, such as a cathode ray tube with a memory, and finally with holography. Holography was born as an attempt to improve the electron microscope. It was well known since 1936 that the resolving power of electron microscopes had to stop tantalizingly short of resolving atomic lattices, because the aperture of electron objectives could not be increased beyond a certain limit, owing to the spherical aberration which could not be corrected. Gabor considered the possibility of taking first a "bad" picture and correcting it by light-optical means. But in an ordinary electron microgram this is not possible, because one-half (the more important half) of the information has dropped out: the

Gabor, Dennis I was born in Budapest, Hungary, on June 5, 1900, the oldest son of Bertalan Gabor, director of a mining company, and his wife Adrienne. My life-long love of physics started suddenly at the age of 15. I could not wait until I got to the university, I learned the calculus and worked through the textbook of Chwolson, the largest at that time, in the next two years. I remember how fascinated I was by Abbe's theory of the microscope and by Gabriel Lippmann's method of colour photography, which played such a great part in my work, 30 years later. Also, with my late brother George, we built up a little laboratory in our home, where we could repeat most experiments which were modern at that time, such as wireless X-rays and radioactivity. Yet, when I reached university age, I opted for engineering instead of physics. Physics was not yet a profession in Hungary, with a total of half-a-dozen university chairs - and who could have been presumptious enough to aspire to one of these?
In 1933, when

Gabor, Dennis

The most important and urgent problems of the technology of today are no longer the satisfactions of the primary needs or of archetypal wishes, but the reparation of the evils and damages by the technology of yesterday.
Dennis Gabor

Till now man has been up against Nature; from now on he will be up against his own nature.

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

  • Gabor, Dennis
  • The great Italian ARISTOCRATIC FAMILIES have shown a remarkable power of survival. There are still Orsinis, Colonnas, Barberinis, della Roveres, Sforzas, Viscontis; and many of them are still living in their ancient palaces. All these princely dynasties were founded by outstandingly energetic men. Almost every family history is worthy of a novel, but seldom an edifying one. It is a curious fact that in seven centuries of brilliant Italian achievements in the ARTS and SCIENCES we find hardly one ARISTOCRATIC name among the great men. But as soon as the aristocracy was officially abolished by the republic (which incidentally resulted in a doubling of the number of titled persons), two first-class talents emerged: the Princes Giuseppe di Lampedusa and Luchino Visconti.
  • INTELLIGENCE is not everything, and though the demand for it still increasing vigorously, it is by no means certain that it will continue for more than perhaps one generation, except in the top brackets. During the TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION, intelligence became indispensable for production.. My feeling is that it may be of equal importance in the future, but for a quite different reason: in order to understand our civilization, and to be at peace with it.
  • In this book I have tried to sketch out a MATURE SOCIETY; a peaceful WORLD on a high level of material civilization, which has given up growth in numbers and in material consumption but not growth in the quality of life, and one which is compatible with the nature of
