Diese werden von der öffentlichen Meinung nicht ohne Grund zumeist mit der Molekularbiologie, Biotechnologie und Genetik in Verbindung gebracht. Es gibt jedoch eine zweite wichtige und sehr erfolgreiche Forschungsfront, die eher organismisch und integrativ als molekular orientiert ist und deren Fragen einer Sichtweise entstammen, die versucht, ganze Organismen, ihre Verhaltensweisen, ihre Evolution und die Anpassung an den jeweils artspezifischen Lebensraum zu verstehen. Karl von Frisch , gebürtiger Wiener, Nobelpreisträger im Jahr 1973 und insbesondere als Bienenforscher weltweit bekannt, war ein Meister dieser Betrachtungsweise. Die von der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften veranstalteten Karl von Frisch Lectures befassen sich mit der bunten Welt der Sinne. Karl von Frisch war der erste, der in einer epochalen Entdeckung nachwies, dass Insekten - in seinem Fall Bienen - polarisiertes Licht wahrnehmen können. Doch wie diese Leistung funktioniert, blieb über Jahrzehnte ein Rätsel. KARL VON FRISCH Zoólogo austriaco galardonado con el Premio Nobel Nacido en Viena el 20 de noviembre de 1886, se doctoró en 1910 por la Universidad de Munich. Frisch demostró que los peces, aunque no son capaces de apreciar los colores, no sólo pueden diferenciar muchos de ellos sino que también son muy sensibles a los sonidos. Im Zentrum seines Schaffens stand die Erforschung der Sinneswahrnehmungen der Honigbiene und der Art und Weise der Verständigung dieser Tiere untereinander. Für seine Leistungen wurde er gemeinsam mit Konrad Lorenz und Nikolaas Tinbergen mit dem Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin geehrt. Mit der Auszeichnung wurden "ihre Entdeckungen zur Organisation und Auslösung von individuellen und sozialen Verhaltensmustern" gewürdigt. Lebenslauf Karl von Frisch studierte Zoologie in München und Wien und promovierte 1910 in Wien. Im gleichen Jahr kam er ans Zoologische Institut der Universität München, wo er 1912 Privatdozent für Zoologie und vergleichende Anatomie wurde. Nach Zwischenstationen an den Universitäten in Rostock und Breslau wurde er 1925 Professor in München. Nach Zerstörung des dortigen Zoologischen Instituts im zweiten Weltkrieg ging er 1946 an die Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz , bis er 1950 nach Wiedereröffnung des Münchner Instituts dorthin zurückkehrte. 1958 wurde er emeritiert, setzte aber auch in der Folgezeit seine wissenschaftlichen Forschungen fort.

SCIENCE ROUND-UP: The language of bees Bee World - Summer, 1993 - Pages 91-98 A 1937 paper by Karl von Frisch has received very little attention since its publication. We believe that Bee World readers will find it interesting and we reproduce it below, with an introduction by Adrian Wenner, Emeritus Professor of the University of California. Introduction Karl von Frisch delivered a lecture 'The language of bees' in March 1937, at University College in London. The summary of his research findings up to that time was published in the same year as an article in English(2). The Smithsonian Institution later reprinted that article, verbatim, in their 1938 Annual Report(3). The article is of considerable historical interest in that von Frisch indicated very clearly therein that the 'language' of bees during recruitment of naive bees to food sources was to him a matter of odour. His statements(2) (e.g. '[Recruits] did not know where the food was. They flew out in all directions and looked for it.'; 'I succeeded with all kinds of flowers with the exception of flowers without any scent. And so it is not difficult to find out the manner of communication.'; 'It is clear from a long series of experiments that, after commencement of the dances the [recruited] bees first seek in the neighbourhood, and then go farther away, and finally search the whole flying district.') support an 'odour-search' model of bee recruitment.
