Aug. 15, 2002 Vol. 21 No. 19 current issue archive / search contact APS elects David Raup, Jerome Friedman By Steve Koppes News Office Members of the society are organized into five classes: mathematical and physical sciences; biological sciences; social sciences; humanities; and the arts, learned professions and public affairs. Raup was selected to serve in its biological sciences class, and Friedman, who currently is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will serve in its mathematical and physical sciences class. Raup is a would-renowned paleontologist and an authority on evolution and mass extinctions. He has studied the long-term patterns of life on earth and how impacts from extraterrestrial bodies such as comets or asteroids may have caused mass extinctions. He is the author of several books, including The Nemesis Affair: A Story of the Death of Dinosaurs and the Ways of Science (1986) and Extinction: Bad Genes or Bad Luck? Friedman shared the 1990 Nobel Prize with Richard Taylor and Henry Kendall for a series of experiments that showed that fundamental particles of matter are not protons and neutrons, but smaller particles known as quarks. This evidence allowed scientists to develop the Standard Model theory of matter, which states that all matter is made up of combinations of six quarks and six leptons that interact with three types of force particles.

Kendall of the Department of Physics and the Laboratory for Nuclear Science will share the 1990 Nobel prize for physics with a colleague at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Professor Richard E. Taylor. The $710,000 award cited the physicists for research at the Stanford accelerator (SLAC) from 1967 through 1973 that revolutionized particle physics. Their seminal investigation provided the first experimental evidence for subnuclear particles called quarks, the most fundamental constituents yet known of heavy particles such as protons and neutrons. The work ultimately had a major impact in reconstructing some of the high-energy physics that attended the birth of the universe. Professor Kendall met the press at a news conference at MIT the day of the award, October 17. Professor Friedman was in Fort Worth, Texas, attending a symposium on the Superconducting Supercollider. Professor Friedman was awakened by a phone call from his wife who told him of the early-morning call to their home from the Swedish Academy of Science. "It was so unbelievable," Friedman said, "I literally thought I was still sleeping and that this was part of my dream."

We in the universities, must make the cogent arguments to help persuade the public of the importance of continuing the program. We also must lead by example. By ensuring that minorities and the disadvantaged have true access to higher education, universities provide them with opportunities for better and more fulfilling lives, lives that better utilize their talents. Success stories of educational attainment also inspire minority youngsters, who believe that certain careers are far beyond their reach. A diversified university better reflects the world in which we live. Because of demographic trends, it has been said that if we do not better untilize the talents of the minority population, our nation will lose its economic competitiveness in the early part of the next millennium. While this is a significant point, I personally support affirmative action because it is the route to fairness in our society. A society that does not have true equality of opportunity is neither far nor just.

I would also like to express my appreciation for the sustained support that you and other members of the House Science Committee have provided for the DOE and for your commitment to improving DOE's ability to serve our national interests. I have been engaged in physics research and education for half a century, and I find it as exciting and rewarding as ever. But unlike some of my colleagues, I didn't start dreaming about science until I was about to graduate from high school. In fact, I received a scholarship to attend the Art Institute of Chicago Museum School and only at the last minute decided to seek admission to the University of Chicago to study physics. This change occurred as a result of reading a small book on relativity.
