Am 9. Juni als Tochter des Grafen und der Gräfin Kinsky von Chinic und Tettau in Prag geboren. Der dem böhmischen Hochadel zugehörige 76jährige Vater stirbt vor der Geburt der Tochter.
In Brünn (Südmähren) verbringt sie die Kindheit, die Jugend in Wien und Klosterneuburg. Die Familie verarmt, u.a. durch die Glücksspiele der Mutter in Spielbanken. Schlacht von Magenta und Solferino und 1866 Niederlage Österreichs in der Schlacht bei Königgrätz. Bertha von Kinskys Interesse ist absorbiert von den Versuchen, eine gute Partie zu machen, aber alle Heiratsprojekte scheitern. Mit 30 Jahren wird sie, da das Kinsky-Vermögen aufgebraucht ist, Erzieherin der Töchter des Freiherrn von Suttner, mit wechselndem Wohnsitz in Wien und auf Schloß Harmannsdorf. Es entwickelt sich eine Beziehung zum 7 Jahre jüngeren Sohn Arthur Gundaccar von Suttner. Nach der Kündigung durch die Suttners bewirbt sie sich um eine Stellung als Sekretärin bei dem Multimillionär Alfred Nobel in Paris. Neben Italienisch und Englisch beherrscht sie fließend Französisch. Nobel will sie engagieren, doch sie kehrt nach Wien zurück. 12. Juni: Heimliche Heirat mit Freiherr Arthur Gundaccar von Suttner in Wien-Gumpendorf. Das Ehepaar von Suttner zieht in den Kaukasus, wo es neun Jahre lang in eingeschränkten Lebensverhältnissen lebt. Freiherr von Suttner arbeitet als Journalist.

    Mit dem gebürtigen Wiener Alfred Hermann Fried gibt sie ab dem 1. Januar die Monatszeitschrift "Die Waffen nieder!" heraus (bis 1899; Nachfolgeorgan ist A. H. Frieds "Friedenswarte"). Bertha von Suttner veröffentlicht darin u. a. die "Randglossen zur Zeitgeschichte" (1892-1899 und 1906-1914) und ist außerdem Mitarbeiterin anderer europäischer Zeitungen. Auf Einladung des "Vereins der Berliner Presse" liest sie in Berlin aus ihrem Roman "Die Waffen nieder!". Auf dem 4. Weltfriedenskongreß in Bern wird der Capper-Moneta-Suttner-Antrag "Europäischer Staaten-bund" eingebracht. Seitdem nimmt die Suttner an fast allen Weltfriedenskongressen und Interparlamentarischen Konferenzen teil. Sie gilt als die berühmteste Pazifistin der Vorkriegszeit. Ihre Herkunft ermöglicht ihr den Zugang zu den höchsten Spitzen der damaligen Gesellschaft und damit auch zu einflußreichen Politikern. Nach dem Kongreß in Bern besucht Bertha von Suttner Alfred Nobel in Zürich. Im Dezember unterstützt sie A. H. Fried bei der Gründung der Deutschen Friedensgesellschaft
    Friedenskongreß in Antwerpen und Interparlamentarische Konferenz im Haag.
