Next James Franck: A versatile scientist JAMES FRANCK was born on August 26, 1882 at Hamburg, Germany, as the son of a banker. He attended the local school and then went to the University of Heidelberg to study Chemistry and Geology. After two semesters, he moved to the University of Berlin, then the centre of Physics in Germany. The colloquium addressed by Rubens, Warburg and Planck played a formative influence in Franck's academic career. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree for his work on ionic mobility in gases (1906). Turbulent career The following year (1907) he became research assistant to Professor Rubens and served for some time in World War I. Afterwards he worked till 1920 under Fritz Haber at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for physical chemistry. He was appointed to a chair at the University of Goettingenr. Max Born (1882-1970) accepted the chair of theoretical physics on the condition of Franck being appointed to a chair in the university. With him Franck formed a life-long friendship, which resulted in building the nucleus of a scientific community at Goettingen. Although a Jew, he was initially allowed to continue in office; but he refused to accept the dismissal of his colleagues. In April 1933, he resigned his post and published a courageous statement of protest against the new laws. Within a few months the whole group including Max Born had to leave Germany.

JAMES-FRANCK BINATIONAL PROGRAM IN LASER MATTER INTERACTIONS The James-Franck Binational Program in Laser Matter Interactions was established in 1988, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv University, for the purpose of advancing this important field. The Program awards research grants annually in the area of the reciprocal effects between lasers and matter. It is now nationwide, and has been extended to include the Weizmann Institute of Science, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. The potential applications of laser technology, which are extremely far-ranging, fall into two main categories: laser analytics, and initiation of chemical processes. Ongoing research in this area spans the entire spectrum from fundamental theory, through experimental observations, to applications in technological, industrial and manufacturing processes. Among the possible applications of new and improved laser techniques are: laser-induced fluorescence; non-linear lenses; multiphoton processes, ionization and mass spectroscopy; laser-induced desorption from metal foils and surfaces; catalytic (particularly photo-induced) processes on surfaces and clusters; chemical size effects and the role of surface geometry in catalysis; high-temperature nozzles; laser generation and spec- troscopy of new materials; and new metal and semi-conductor applications. The James-Franck Program played a major role in setting up the Hebrew University's central laboratory for electro-optics, where specialized equipment, including advanced lasers, are available to researchers.

Das Franck-Hertz-Experiment Die unittelbarste und von theoretischen Elementen freieste Prüfung der Idee der im Atom vorhandenen Energiestufen erhalten wir durch die Versuche von FRANCK und HERTZ aus dem Jahre 1913. Die Energiezustände eines Atoms konnten erstmals direkt experimentell nachgewiesen werden. Und dies ist möglich, wenn man Gasatome mit Elektronen beschießt und den Energieverlust mißt. Elektronen in der Atom- Hülle setzen dem Eindringen von anderen Teilchen einen straken Widerstand entgegen. Es lag daher nahe, dieses Verhalten der elastischen Grenze durch Beschuß mit Elektronen untersuchen, und genau das wird im FRANCK- HERTZ-Experiment gemacht. Das eigentliche Ziel dieser Untersuchungen betraf also die Frage der elastische Zusammenstöße zwischen den Elektronen einerseits und den Gasatomen bzw. Molekülen andererseits. Atomen kann Energie in Form von Strahlung oder über elastische und unelastische Stöße zugeführt werden. Die zugeführte Energie wird von einem Atom kurz gespeichert und dann in Form eines Photons abgegeben. Das Entscheidende dabei ist, dass Energie nicht kontinuierlich, in jeder beliebigen Menge, sondern nur in bestimmten Portionen (sogenannten ,,Quanten``) von Atomen absorbiert und emittiert werden kann. Dies ist eine der wichtigsten Entdeckungen der Physik zu Beginn des 20. Er beginnt 1901 in Heidelberg ein Jura- und Ökonomiestudium, doch interessiert er sich seit früher Jugend für die Naturwissenschaft. Während des Studiums macht er die Bekanntschaft von Max Born, der ihm den Rat gibt, Physik zu studieren. Franck geht daraufhin 1902 nach Berlin, habilitiert sich dort 1911 im Fach Physik und macht die Bekanntschaft von Gustav Hertz. Galerie in der Halle des Goethe-Instituts Rext: Ilse Stein Am 7. April 1933 verkündeten die Nationalsozialisten das „Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums". Dessen antisemitische Zielrichtung wurde im § 3 deutlich. Nach ihm waren „nicht-arische" Beamte in den Ruhestand zu versetzen, ausgenommen waren lediglich Frontkämpfer des Ersten Weltkriegs.
