Werner Forssmann
German surgeon who shared with Andre F. Cournand and Dickinson W. Richards the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1956. A pioneer in heart research, Forssmann contributed to the development of cardiac catheterization, a procedure in which a tube is inserted into a vein at the elbow and passed through the vein into the heart. While a surgical resident in Berlin (1929), Forssmann used himself as the first human subject, watching the progress of the catheter in a mirror held in front of a fluoroscope screen. Forssmann's daring experiment was condemned at the time as foolhardy and dangerous, and in the face of severe criticism he abandoned cardiology for urology.
Forssmann's procedure, with slight modifications, was put into practice in 1941 by Richards and Cournand, and has since become an extremely valuable tool in diagnosis and research. It has made possible, among other things, precise measurement of intracardiac pressure and blood flow, injection into the heart of drugs and of opaque material visible on X-ray photographs, and insertion of electrodes for the regulation of the heartbeat. Forssmann graduated in medicine from the University of Berlin (1928) and then did postgraduate study in urology at Berlin and Mainz. He served as chief of surgery at the city hospital in Dresden-Friedrichstadt and in 1958 was named chief of the surgical division of the Evangelical Hospital in Dusseldorf.

Werner Forssmann (1904-1979)
In 1929 in a small hospital in Eberswald Germany Werner Forssmann, a young surgical resident, anesthetized his own elbow, inserted a catheter in his antecubital vein and, catheter dangling from his arm, proceeded to a basement x-ray room where he documented the catheter's position in his right atrium — proving that a catheter could be inserted safely into a human heart.
Forssmann's goal was to find a safe way to inject drugs for cardiac resuscitation. He was determined that catheterization was the key, but it was believed at the time that any entry into the heart would be fatal. Forssmann was immediately fired for his self-experimentation, despite the significance of his discovery. The popular press acclaimed his work, but the medical establishment branded him as crazy, scorning him and ignoring his work for over a decade.
He continued to experiment with catheterization in dogs and it is alleged that he stopped self-experimentation only when he had used all of his veins with 17 cut downs. Discouraged by his lack of acceptance in cardiology he switched to urology and eventually became a country doctor. He never returned to cardiology research but was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1956 (along with cardiology innovators Cournand and Richards) for his pioneering efforts.

Werner Theodor Otto Forssmann was born in Berlin on August 29, 1904, the son of Julius Forssmann and Emmy Hindenberg. He was educated at the Askanische Gymnasium (secondary grammar school) in Berlin. Leaving school in 1922, he went to the University of Berlin to study medicine, passing his State Examination in 1929. For his clinical training he went to the University Medical Clinic, working under Professor Georg Klemperer, and he studied anatomy under Professor Rudolph Fick. For clinical instruction in surgery he went, in 1929, to the August Victoria Home at Eberswalde near Berlin.
It was here that he was the first to develop a technique for the catheterization of the heart. This he did by inserting a cannula into his own antecubital vein, through which he passed a catheter for 65 cm and then walked to the X-ray department, where a photograph was taken of the catheter lying in his right auricle.
Subsequently he worked at the , Berlin, and the City Hospital at Mainz, and then went to the Rudolf Virchow Hospital in Berlin for specialist training in urology under Dr. Karl Heusch. He was appointed Chief of the Surgical Clinic of the City Hospital at Dresden-Friedrichstadt and at the Robert Koch Hospital, Berlin. At the beginning of the Second World War, Forssmann served as a Sanitary Officer, reaching the rank of Surgeon-Major; but he became a prisoner of war until his release in 1945, when he went into practice with his wife, in the Schwarzwald.
