In 1922 he discovered lysozyme, an antiseptic found in tears, body secretions, albumen, and certain fish plants. His discovery of penicillin came about accidentally in 1928 in the course of research on influenza. His observation that the mold contaminating one of his culture plates had destroyed the bacteria laid the basis for the development of penicillin therapy. Fleming was knighted in 1944. In 1945 he shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with the British scientists Howard Walter Florey and Ernst Boris Chain for their contributions to the development of penicillin. Sir Alexander Fleming
By Mary L. Bushong From his beginnings on a sheep farm in a remote part of Scotland, Alec Fleming went on to become a celebrated doctor and researcher in London, England. It was through his efforts that millions of lives were eventually saved.
Alexander Fleming was born in Scotland on August 6, 1881. The second youngest of eight children, he and his siblings enjoyed roaming the countryside around their farm as they grew up. Their quiet lives were broken up when Alec was about 14. That was when his father died. His eldest brother took over the family farm. Another brother, Tom, was a doctor and was establishing a new practice in London. He was soon joined by five of his siblings, including Alec.
After finishing school, Alec tried working at a shipping company, but he did not like it. In 1900, when the Boer War broke out, he and two brothers joined a Scottish regiment, but they never made it to the Transvaal. Alec received a small inheritance from an uncle and decided he wanted to go to medical school. He got the highest score on his examinations and the choice of any of the medical schools.

    - Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) Born at Lochfield Farm near Darvel, in Ayrshire, Fleming moved to London when he was 13, after the death of his father. He worked as a shipping clerk for five years and then became a medical student at St Mary's in Paddington, part of London University. He was a brilliant student and after graduation he joined the bacteriology lab at St Mary's, under Almroth Wright. During the First World War, Fleming saw at first hand the failure of current antiseptics to treat infected wounds and after the war he returned to St Mary's to find a solution to the problem. Initially, he developed the use of antityphoid vaccines and discovered lysozyme which had some limited use as a food preservative. In 1928 he discovered that a culture of staphylococcus bacteria had been accidentally infected by an airborne mould which had destroyed the bacteria. This was to transform the treatment of infected wounds with penicillin. The difficulties of developing the fragile substance commercially meant that it took 15 years before it could be produced in large quantities but two Oxford biochemists Howard Florey and Ernst Chan succeeded. Initial supplies were used exclusively by the armed forces and undoubtedly saved thousands of lives. Fleming was knighted in 1944 and Fleming, Florey and Chan received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1945. Fleming did not patent penicillin, hoping that this would help to develop the product as a cheap and effective drug.

Search Inventors The History of Penicillin Alexander Fleming, John Sheehan, Andrew Moyer By Mary Bellis Penicillin is one of the earliest discovered and widely used antibiotic agents, derived from the Penicillium mold. Antibiotics are natural substances that are released by bacteria and fungi into the earth. In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming observed that colonies of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus could be destroyed by the mold Penicillium notatum. Proving that medicines could kill certain types of disease-causing bacteria inside the body. At the time, however, the importance of Fleming's discovery was not known. Use of penicillin did not begin until the 1940s when Howard Florey and Ernst Chain developed a powdery form of the medicine. Alexander Fleming

In 1935 Sir Alexander Fleming gave this sample of Penicillium mould to a colleague working with him at St Mary's Hospital, London, England. Why is this sample so important ? Although it may not look like much, it represents first chapter in a story about how an interesting observation led to the development of modern antibiotics. The sample of Penicillium can now be found in the Science Museum, London.

Sir Alexander Fleming August 6 March 11 ) is famous as the discoverer of the antibiotic substance lysozyme and for starting the research that led to the development of Penicillium notatum into penicillin Fleming was born in Ayrshire Scotland . He later attended St. Mary's medical school until World War I broke out. He participated in a battlefield hospital with many of his colleagues in the fronts of France . Being exposed to the horrid medical infections by the dying soldiers, he returned to St. Mary's after the war with renewed energy in searching for an improved antiseptic. Both of Fleming's discoveries happened entirely by accident during the 1920s. The first, lysozyme, was discovered after mucus from his nose dropped into a bacterium laced petri dish (he sneezed). A few days later, it was noted that bacteria where the mucus had fallen had destroyed the bacteria. Fleming's labs were usually in disarray, which led to be to his advantage. In September , he was sorting through the many idle experiments strewn about his lab. He inspected each specimen before discarding it and noticed an interesting
