Sir Alexander Fleming
Bakteriologe Sir Alexander Fleming * 6.

He proved to be a good researcher so joined research department of St Mary's Hospital, London in 1906. He was to spend his entire working life here. Horrified by his experiences in France in WW1 he swore to find medicines which would alleviate infection of wounds. In 1928 an unwashed and bacterially infected flask appeared to be disinfected by mould which had grown from airborne spores. Penicillin's use in combating bacterium had been discovered. Strangely Fleming didn't follow up his discovery after publishing his results in 1929. From his initial work antibiotics were developed and added to the weapons at the hands of doctors. Millions of people worldwide owe there lives to Sir Alexander's discovery. Fleming was knighted in 1944 and won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.

Fleming, Sir Alexander
Sir Alexander Fleming was a Scottish scientist who discovered the first ever antibiotic. This was penicillin, an excellent drug for killing bacteria. In 1928, in his lab he noticed that a mould had formed in his dish. It was killing the bacteria. From this mould came penicillin. Researcher: Gareth D. K. Elliott. Fleming, Sir Alexander Fleming, Sir Alexander, , Scottish bacteriologist, discoverer of penicillin (1928) and lysozyme (1922), an antibacterial substance found in saliva and other body secretions. Educated at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, Univ. of London, where he later became professor of bacteriology, he published many articles on bacteriology, immunology, and chemotherapy. He shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Ernst B. Chain and Sir Howard W. Florey for work on penicillin. Fleming was knighted in 1944. See biography by G. MacFarlane (1985). Fleming, Sir Alexander
Scottish bacteriologist who discovered the first antibiotic drug, penicillin, in 1928. In 1922 he had discovered lysozyme, an antibacterial enzyme present in saliva, nasal secretions, and tears. While studying this, he found an unusual mould growing on a neglected culture dish, which he isolated and grew into a pure culture; this led to his discovery of penicillin. It came into use in 1941. In 1945 he won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Howard W Florey and Ernst B Chain , whose research had brought widespread realization of the value of penicillin.
Fleming was born in Lochfield, Ayrshire, and studied medicine at St Mary's Hospital, London, where he remained in the bacteriology department for his entire career, becoming professor 1928.
Fleming discovered the antibacterial properties of penicillin, but its purification and concentration was left to Florey and Chain, in Oxford. Fleming also developed methods, which are still in use, of staining spores and flagella of bacteria. He identified organisms that cause wound infections and showed how cross-infection by streptococci can occur among patients in hospital wards. He also studied the effects of different antiseptics on various kinds of bacteria and on living cells. His interest in chemotherapy led him to introduce

Information on Sir Alexander Fleming and penicillin
Information on Sir Alexander Fleming describing his lifes route to the discovery of penicillin.
Sir Alexander Fleming was born in 1881 in rural Lochfield, Scotland. He was the seventh of eight siblings and half-siblings. He and his siblings often roamed through the countryside. Of these excursions, Fleming remarked, We unconsciously learned a great deal from nature. Fleming attended the Polytechnic School and after graduating, worked at a shipping firm. He graduated from the medical school of St. Marys Hospital in London and began doing immunological research. He was a researcher at St. Marys throughout his professional career. In 1909, a chemical treatment for syphilis was developed by the German chemist, Dr. Paul Ehrlich. The chemical was named salvarsan, which means, that which saves by arsenic. Fleming was one of the physicians to use salvarsan, which was injected intravenously. He was so successful with this treatment that he attracted many patients, and received the nickname Private 606. bodyOffer(26183) During World War I, he was an army doctor and studied wound infections. He observed that antiseptics injured the body cells more than they injured the microbes. He felt that there should be some chemical that could fight microbe infection, such as that found in wounds, which were caused by exploding shells. He realized that a substance was needed that would harm bacteria but would not harm body cells.

Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955)
It is so difficult to imagine a world without penicillin, the wonder drug that saves so many thousands of lives each year in every country of the world and that helps cure so many different diseases. Alexander Fleming, from Lockfield, Ayr was the man responsible for its discovery in 1928; thus he led the way for the widespread, universally accepted practice of antibiotic therapy for infectious diseases.
Fleming graduated from London University Medical School in 1906. He continuing to research antibacterial substances that would prove non-toxic to human tissues while he was serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War I. He later joined the staff of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1928. While working with staphylococcus bacteria, he happened to notice that a bacteria-free circle had grown around a growth of mold that had been contaminating a staph culture. He called the substance penicillin that had prevented the growth of the bacteria. His startling discovery was published in British Journal of Experimental Pathology.
In addition to penicillin (which he did very little to promote), Fleming also discovered lysozyme, an anti-bacterial agent that is found in human tears and saliva. He received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1945 (along with Ernst Chain and Howard Florey, both of whose continued work had helped in the purification, testing and quantity production of penicillin, all of which was necessary for the drug to be accepted, and thus making Fleming famous.)
