"The medicines of tomorrow will depend upon research being done today, for which animal experimentation is essential. Ignore the need for that research and we shall lose the cures that we are entitled to expect in the next 50 years for illnesses that afflict hundreds of millions of people such as cancer, heart disease, viral diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis and sickle cell anaemia." - Sir John Vane, Nobel Prizewinner 1982 Schack August Steenberger KROGH - discovers the mechanism controlling the capillary blood vessels. Reserved 1921 Sir Archibald Vivian HILL and Otto Fritz MEYERHOF - discover the oxygen/lactic acid mechanism in working muscles. Sir Frederick Grant BANTING and John James Richard MACLEOD - discover insulin to treat sugar diabetes. (Photo: Wellcome Institute Library) Willem EINTHOVEN - invents the ElectroCardioGram which examines the electrical activity of the heart.

#1. The Danish Monarchy, stretches back almost 1,000 years, to King Gorm the old, the first King of the Danes. The present Queen Margrethe the Second, can trace her ancestry clear back to King Gorm the old and Queen Tyhre.
#2. The Danish Flag, a white cross on a blood-red background, is the oldest Flag in the world, first flown at the battle at Riga June 15 in 1219. Today celebrated in Denmark as Valdemars Dag.
#3. King Knud the Great, and later his son, ruled most of Scandinavia and Northern Germany to the Elbe River, Normandy in France and most of England, for a hundred years, hence our system of having your day in court and having your case heard by a judge only, traces its roots to the "Dane Law", introduced in England during the reign of the Danes.
#4. Space Explorer, Tycho Brache, Astronomer (1546-1601) was a Dane. He and Copernius in Poland were the first to realize that the sun did not rotate around the earth but rather the Earth rotated around its own axis and in turn circled around the sun.
#5. Ole Roemer (1644-1710) discovered the "Speed of Light".

Simon Flexner papers / American Philosophical Society "As Dr. Welch gradually retired, Father [Simon Flexner] stepped into his shoes as the leader of the American scientific medical establishment. Under successive governors he served as chairman of the Public Health Council of the State of New York, an advisory body to the Board of Health that had administrative powers of its own. For my brother and me, it was particularly delightful that the very low number of our automobile license plate indicated a high state official who it was wise for the police not to tangle with." (Maverick's Progress. An Autobiography. By James Thomas Flexner. Fordham University Press, 1996.) Simon Flexner married into the Maryland aristocracy. His wife's father, James Carey Thomas, was one of the founding trustees of JHU and was influential in establishing the medical school.

The Rockefeller Institute funded Otto Heinrich Warburg at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Germany. Simon Flexner invited him to lecture at RIMR in 1924, and his papers show correspondence from 1924 until 1931.
Otto Heinrich Warburg
Flexner's correspondence with William Rogers Embree from 1917 to 1936 includes a "letter expressing concern that the press charged Rockefeller Foundation dominated certain departments of New York City administration, 9/22/17." Embree later left the Rockefeller Foundation to become chairman of the Rosenwald Foundation, established by Julius Rosenwald of Sears, Roebuck.
