Richard Feynman
Richard Feynman was born on May 11, 1918, in Queens, New York. By age 15, he had mastered differential and integral calculus. In 1936, he attended MIT, and took every physics course offered. Later he went to Princeton for graduate studies. His interests in subatomic physics, he embarked on a lifelong quest to clarify the mathematics of a subatomic world. Feynman finished his Ph.D., and married his longtime sweetheart, Arline Greenbaum. She was already very ill with tuberculosis. In 1942, Feynman was asked to go to Los Alamos. Hans Bethe made the 24 year old Feynman a group leader in the theoretical division. Feynman worked on estimating how much uranium would be needed to achieve critical mass. He developed many experimental devices to test his hypothesis without blowing up Los Alamos. When Oakridge ran into safety problems while separating uranium it was Feynman who devised procedures to protect the staff from radiation poisoning. Arline passed away on June 16, 1945. After the war, he followed Hans Bethe to Cornell University. It was here that Feynman developed a simple notation to describe the complex behavior of subatomic particles. This notation became known as Feynman Diagrams. In the 1950s, he moved to Cal Tech. In 1965, he, along with Julian Schwinger and Shinichiro Tomonaga, shared the

OBITUARY Richard P. Feynman, a Nobel laureate in physics, best-selling author and former member of the presidential commission that investigated the Challenger disaster, died Monday night in Los Angeles. He was 69. Mr. Feynman, who died at the University of California at Los Angeles Medical Center after an eight-year battle with abdominal cancer, was a popular and energetic lecturer who, despite his illness, continued to teach at the California Institute of Technology until two weeks ago. Mr. Feynman graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939 and received his doctorate from Princeton University in 1942. He was a member of the team that developed the first atomic bomb at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He was widely known for his insatiable curiosity, gentle wit, brilliant mind and playful temperament. These qualities were clearly evident in his popular 1985 book of reminiscences, "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman," which was on the New York Times best-seller list for 14 weeks. MIT physicist Philip Morrison called Mr. Feynman "the most original theoretical physicist of our time," according to a report by United Press International. Morrison said Mr. Feynman, who called his Nobel Prize "a pain in the neck," was "extraordinarily honest with himself and everyone else," and added that "he didn't like ceremony or pomposity . . . he was extremely informal. He liked colorful language and jokes."

"You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you're finished, you'll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird... So let's look at the bird and see what it's doing that's what counts. I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something." Richard Feynman
This is a relatively short (but rich) page I plan on continuously updating when I have the time. Richard Feynman did so much during his life, it would be hard for me to capture it in the detail I'd like! If you have read his creations, you know the man better than I could ever describe, but for the new and the sincere admirers, I've provided as much background as yet possible.
I'd like to think of Feynman as someone who was delighted by the universe he lived in and the enigmas it presented to him. It was a child-like, in the sense that it was pure and honest, fascination. While this quality is rare in and of itself, what made the man rare was not only curiosity but the ability to investigate and theorize. Not all possess minds such as his, and if they do, often they are not directed towards such pure goals.

    Personal observations
    on the reliability
    of the Shuttle
by Richard P. Feynman For a successful technology,
reality must take precedence over public relations,
    for nature cannot be fooled
    Introduction
It appears that there are enormous differences of opinion as to the probability of a failure with loss of vehicle and of human life. The estimates range from roughly 1 in 100 to 1 in 100,000. The higher figures come from the working engineers, and the very low figures from management. What are the causes and consequences of this lack of agreement? Since 1 part in 100,000 would imply that one could put a Shuttle up each day for 300 years expecting to lose only one, we could properly ask "What is the cause of management's fantastic faith in the machinery?" We have also found that certification criteria used in Flight Readiness Reviews often develop a gradually decreasing strictness. The argument that the same risk was flown before without failure is often accepted as an argument for the safety of accepting it again. Because of this, obvious weaknesses are accepted again and again, sometimes without a sufficiently serious attempt to remedy them, or to delay a flight because of their continued presence.
    Solid Rockets (SRB)
An estimate of the reliability of solid rockets was made by the range safety officer, by studying the experience of all previous rocket flights. Out of a total of nearly 2,900 flights, 121 failed (1 in 25). This includes, however, what may be called, early errors, rockets flown for the first few times in which design errors are discovered and fixed. A more reasonable figure for the mature rockets might be 1 in 50. With special care in the selection of parts and in inspection, a figure of below 1 in 100 might be achieved but 1 in 1,000 is probably not attainable with today's technology. (Since there are two rockets on the Shuttle, these rocket failure rates must be doubled to get Shuttle failure rates from Solid Rocket Booster failure.)

Web posted at: 11:55 p.m. EDT From Correspondent Miles O'Brien PASADENA, California (CNN) Eight years after his death, quirky Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman is making something of a comeback, and Ralph Leighton is leading the way. "His name is popping up in more and more places," said Leighton, who played bongo drums with Feynman as a teen-ager and wrote a best-selling book entitled, "Surely You're Joking, Mister Feynman." But Leighton's work is just a fraction of what has been written by or about Richard Feynman. You can buy recordings of his jam sessions, and you can find him in bookstores. He is on the Internet, the focus of many Web sites, and is even the hero in a comic strip. Recently, he was portrayed by Matthew Broderick in the movie "Infinity." Richard P Feynman 1918-1986
I can't honestly say that Feynman deserves a place in the history of computing. But he has been dead less than a decade and may yet earn such a place: He suggested in 1982 that quantum computers might have fundamentally more powerful computational abilities than conventional ones (basing his conjecture on the extreme difficulty encountered in computing the result of quantum mechanical processes on conventional computers, in marked contrast to the ease with which Nature computes the same results), a suggestion which has feen followed up by fits and starts, and has recently led to the conclusion that either quantum mechanics is wrong in some respect, or else a quantum mechanical computer can make factoring integers "easy", destroying the entire existing edifice of publicKey cryptography, the current proposed basis for the electronic community of the future. Mostly, Dick Feynman is just a wonderful, irreplacable character, and I can't resist including here a pointer to a biography of him. Dick Feynman was an irrepressably "curious character" who devoted his life to playing with the universe, teasing out its secrets in his own way on his own initiative, fascinated by everything from quarks to ants to galaxies, absolutely unafraid of any problem or person.
