V. Chemical Transmission I n the first decades of the 20th century, research about the chemical mediation of action in the autonomous, or vegetative nervous system, how it was then called, was developing at a feverish pace in many laboratories in the world. The main centers were located in England, where William Maddock Bayliss Ernest Henry Starling After working 12 years on the pharmacology of the Autonomous Nervous System, now in the University of Graz, Austria, he devised the crucial experiment which provided the first reliable evidence for the existence of chemical transmission in a synapse. The legend tells that he had the idea of the experiment in a dream and that he ran to the lab as soon as he was awake.
T = time
S = stimulus in the vagus
D = contractions of heart D
R = contractions of heart R
R ), there was a strong inhibition in this heart beats. The second heart ( D ) was unaffected. However, when he perfused the second heart with the outflow of the perfusion of the first one, he achieved exactly the same effect, with a small delay provoked by the pump action and the chemical action.
The only fact that could explain this result was that there was some substance being produced at the parasympathetic synapse level in heart R, which had the power to provoke a similar response in the muscles of heart D. Loewi called this substance

Council Honorees and the Nobel Prize
Our Continued Anniversary Celebration
Edward D. Frohlich, MD
Editor-in-Chief L. Gabriel Navar, PhD
Associate Editors This month we begin another feature and cover series to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Hypertension . For the next several issues, we shall honor those highly respected leaders and investigators who played important roles for the Council for High Blood Pressure Research (CHBPR). Each of the individuals that we honor had Awards, or was a speaker invited to present the Corcoran or other important Special Lectures. Then, sometime following these acknowledgments of their seminal scientific achievements or scientific presentations highlighting their important investigative work, they were honored by selection to receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their research achievements.

Nobel Prizes in Neuroscience
Part I
The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious honors that a scientist can be awarded. This article summarizes of the Nobel Prize-wining work by people who changed our view of the nervous system through their research and discoveries.

"in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system"
Camillo Golgi (Italy) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Santiago Ramon y Cajal (Spain) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Cajal and Golgi shared the Nobel Prize for their tremendous contribution to our understanding o the anatomical structure of the brain. Interestingly, they both had different theories about the nature of contacts between nerve cell. Despite this, each scientists produced a large body of work and refined techniques histological techniques impacted future generations of neuroanatomists. Some of this work is described in a previous feature article

"for his work on the dioptrics of the eye"
Allvar Gullstrand (Sweden) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
This price was award for the furtherance of our understanding of the optic principles of the eye and its function in vision.

"for his work on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular apparatus"

Dr. Julius Axelrod Julius Axelrod was born on May 30th, 1912, in New York City. He obtained his B.Sc. in 1933 at the College of the City of New York, M.A. in 1941 at New York University, and Ph.D. in 1955 from the George Washington University. “In October 1970, the Karolinska Institutet decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1970 jointly to Bernard Katz, Ulf von Euler and Julius Axelrod for their discoveries concerning "the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation". The discoveries which the 1970 Nobel laureates have made have given us answers to questions of fundamental importance for the understanding of the mechanism underlying the transmission between the nerve cells, i.e. at the so-called synapses, and between the nerve terminals and the so-called effector organs, for instance between the motor nerve fibres and the muscle fibres which they innervate. The transmission between the nerve cells, which radically differs from the mechanisms underlying the impulse transmission in the nerve fibres, is mediated by chemical substances, so-called neurotransmitters, which carry the message from one cell to the other. The three scientists have been working independently of each other, but their discoveries all contribute in solving principal questions concerning the neurotransmitters, their storage, release and inactivation.
