Press Release: The 1970 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET
October 1970
Karolinska Institutet
has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1970 jointly to
Bernard Katz, Ulf von Euler and Julius Axelrod
for their discoveries concerning "the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation".
Sir Bernard Katz ' discoveries concerning the mechanism for the release of the transmitter acetylcholine from the nerve terminals at the nerve-muscle junction, under the influence of the nerve impulses, are fundamental not only for the understanding of the so-called cholinergic transmission, but are also of primary importance for our knowledge about the synaptic transmission between the nerve cells in the central nervous system.
Professor Ulf von Euler has discovered that the substance noradrenaline serves as neurotransmitter at the nerve terminals of the sympathetic nervous system. He has also shown how this substance is stored in small nerve granules within the nerve fibres of this system.

FEBRUARY 15 - BIRTHS Herman Kahn
(source)
Born 15 Feb 1922; died 7 Jul 1983.
American physicist, military analyst (1948-61) and futurist best known for his controversial studies of nuclear warfare. Kahn won recognition for his dispassionate analysis of nuclear war in his books On Thermonuclear War (1960) which still, in its detached analysis of various nuclear-war scenarios, retains the power to shock.and Thinking About the Unthinkable (1962) which predicted the probability and survivability of nuclear war. Later books included the optimistic The Year 2000 (1967) and Why ABM ? (1969). In 1961 he founded the influential Hudson Institute in New York to make reasoned predictions on world affairs, from narcotics policy to global economics, energy, international trade, population, transportation, crime, medicine. Albert C. Gilbert

Born 15 Feb 1884; died 1961.
Albert Carlton Gilbert was the inventor of the Erector set. Gilbert founded the A.C. Gilbert Co. New Haven, Connecticut in 1908 as a manufacturer of boxed magic sets. When he introduced Erector Sets in 1913, there were several construction toys out. The most prominent was the Meccano construction toy developed by Hornby in England, which consisted of pulleys, gears, and several 1/2" wide strips of varying length with holes evenly spaced on them. Gilbert needed something unique, and created was the square girder. Gilbert's Erector sets included several 1" wide strips with triangles cut in them and the edges bent over so 4 strips could be put together with 2 screws to form a very sturdy square girder. Erector Sets sold 30 million over the next 40 years.

Russian spacecraft designer and cosmonaut who took part, with Vladimir M. Komarov and Boris B. Yegorov, in the world's first multimanned spaceflight, Voskhod 1 (1964) and was also flight director on the Soyuz 18/Salyut mission in 1975. Only ten people had been into orbit before the Voskhod 1 mission and this was the first time a spacecraft had carried more than one occupant. Ruth Sager Born 7 Feb 1918; died 29 Mar 1997.
American geneticist chiefly noted for recognizing the importance of nonchromosomal genes. She conducted groundbreaking research in chromosomal theory, disproving the 19th century Austrian botanist Gregor Johann Mendel's once prevalent law of inheritance - a principle stating that chromosomal genes found in a cell's nucleus control the transmission of all inherited characteristics. Through her research beginning in the 1950s, Sager revealed that a second set of genes (nonchrosomomal in nature) also play a role in one's genetic composition. In addition to advancing the science of nonchromosomal genetics, she worked to uncover various genetic mechanisms associated with cancer. Ulf von Euler
