Eucken was an idealist philosopher who saw that man has an inner spiritual life, which soars beyond everyday life and the physical world. In his work Eucken transformed idealism into a quest toward elevated spiritual level. Eucken's fame was short-lived and today Eucken's writings are more or less forgotten. Besides philosophical studies, he also published works in religion. Eucken's award was in tune with the partly incomplete will of Alfred Nobel, in which he had intended the literary award to recognize "excellence in works of an idealistic tendency". "Naturalism cannot give to literature an inner independence or allow it an initiative of its own; for if literature is only a hand of life on the dial of time, it can only imitate and register events as they happen. By means of impressive descriptions it may help the time to understand its own desires better; but since creative power is denied to it, it cannot contribute to the inner liberation and elevation of man." Eucken, Rudolf Christoph Eucken, Rudolf Christoph German Idealist philosopher, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1908), interpreter of Aristotle, and author of works in ethics and religion. Eucken studied at the University of Gottingen under the German thinker Rudolf Hermann Lotze, a teleological Idealist, and at Berlin under Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg, a German philosopher whose ethical concerns and historical treatment of philosophy attracted him. Appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Basel, Switz., in 1871, Eucken left in 1874 to become professor of philosophy at the University of Jena, a position he held until 1920. Distrusting abstract intellectualism and systematics, Eucken centred his philosophy upon actual human experience. He maintained that man is the meeting place of nature and spirit and that it is his duty and his privilege to overcome his nonspiritual nature by incessant active striving after the spiritual life. This pursuit, sometimes termed ethical activism, involves all of man's faculties but especially requires efforts of the will and intuition. A strident critic of naturalist philosophy, Eucken held that man's soul differentiated him from the rest of the natural world and that the soul could not be explained only by reference to natural processes. His criticisms are particularly evident in Individual and Society (1923) and Der Sozialismus und seine Lebensgestaltung (1920; Socialism: An Analysis, 1921). The second work attacked Socialism as a system that limits human freedom and denigrates spiritual and cultural aspects of life.

Rudolf Christoph Eucken Zeit und Ewigkeit S. 55-60 An dem aber, was hier das Leben an innerer Bewegung und an geschichtlicher Gestaltung gewinnt, nimmt auch die Seele des Einzelnen vollauf teil, ja sie erfährt die Wandlung am unmittelbarsten und tiefsten. Denn nunmehr kann das Leben nicht mehr seine Aufgabe darin finden, nur eine im Grunde schon vorhandene Natur zu voller Deutlichkeit herauszuarbeiten und kräftig festzuhalten. Denn die Steigerung der ethischen Forderung mit ihrem Bestehen auf einem neuen und reinen Menschen macht alle Leistung bloßer Naturkraft unzulänglich und verlangt eine Erneuerung von Grund aus. Damit zuerst entsteht eine Geschichte der Seele und macht sich zum Kern allen Lebens. Die großen Gegensätze des Daseins stoßen hier unmittelbar aufeinander und halten das Leben des Menschen, das sich zwischen ihnen hin und her bewegt, in unablässiger Spannung. So gibt es hier viel mehr Bewegung und Wandlung als in der antiken Gedankenwelt. Aber andererseits wirkt vieles zusammen, um das Streben nach Beharren festzuhalten und weiter zu verstärken. Die völlige Überweltlichkeit und die persönlichere Fassung der Gottesidee gibt der auch hier, namentlich nach erfochtenem äußeren Siege, auf der Höhe des Lebens ersehnten Ruhe in Gott eine größere Wärme und Innigkeit, noch dringlicher wird das Verlangen nach völliger Befreiung von allem unsteten und unlauteren Treiben der Welt. Das Erscheinen des Ewigen in der Zeit konnte dann leicht so verstanden werden, dass es dem Menschen gestattet, schon inmitten des Lebens sein Sinnen und Denken ganz in das Ewige zu stellen und von aller Zeit zu befreien. Dieser Gedankengang hat sich namentlich in der griechischen Kirche, vor allem in ihrem Mönchstum, befestigt und dauernd behauptet.
