He fought with the antifascist resistance in World War II; after the war, his work retained an optimism tempered by violence and hardship. His most impressive work, 11 years in the writing, was To Axion Esti [Worthy It Is] (1959; tr. 1974). A three-part poem that fused the poet's personal experiences with evocations of Greek myth and history, it catapulted him to fame and became extremely popular with the Greek public, particularly those parts that were set to music. In 1979 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Among his works in English translation are the selected poems of The Sovereign Sun (1974) and What I Love

ART PAGE HOME LIFE AND ART OF ODYSSEUS ELYTIS Odysseas Elytis (Odysseas Alepoudelis) was born in Iráklion, Crete, into a prosperous Cretan family. His parents and ancestors came from the island of Lesbos, home of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Elytis studied law at Athens University from 1930 to 1935 without taking a degree. He worked periodically in the family's soap manufacturing business. Inspired by French Surrealism and especially Paul Eluard Elytis started to write verse. His first poems appeared in 1935 in magazine Ta Nea Grammata, which also published George Seferis works - he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1963. During WW II when Nazis occupied Greece, Elytis joined the resistance movement and served as a second lieutenant in Albania in 1940-41. In 1943 appeared Asma iroiko ke penthimo ghia ton hameno anthipolochago tis Alvanias (Heroic and Elegiac Song for the Lost Second Lieutenant of the Albanian Campaign). In it Elytis's joyful visions of youth and the sun-drenched Aegean nature changed into acknowlegmenet of violence and sudden death. In the poem the youthful hero is killed on the battlefield and miraculously resurrected throught his youth and heroism. After the war Elytis wrote critics for the newspaper Kathimerini and worked for the National Broadcasting Institute in Athens in 1945-46 and again 1953-54. In 1948 he moved to Paris, where he studied literature at the Sorbonne. During this time he became acquainted with Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and others of the Paris art world.

Sea surf kiss on its caressed sand-Eros Dreams and dreams came to the birthday of jasmine With the first drop of rain summer was killed The blood of love empurpled me You have a taste of tempest on your lips And that shell of yours wherein the Aegean shall echo On the breast of our deep dreams, is it the mad pomegranate tree? Thus often when I am speaking of the sun a huge crimson rose gets tangled in my tongue. They struck the day at a good point Child with skinned knee head with cut hair dream with uncut hair I shall try the spasm that lifts you to the stars In the beginning the light And the first hour when the lips still in clay taste the things of the world I was given the Greek language; a poor house on Homer's shores Now the Gods' humiliation Now the ashes of Man Now Now the zero and Forever the world the small the great Peasants of the boundless blue!

Odysseus Elytis
translated by Jeffrey Carson and Nikos Sarris $56.00 hardcover 0-8018-4924-1 (12 ctn qty) 1997 632 pp. Add hardcover to shopping cart "Jeffrey Carsona poet himself with a kindred sensibility to Elytis'shas admirably succeeded in bringing across the Greek poet's lyrical voice and the richness of his diction. This first translation of Elytis's complete works is accurate and elegant, a work of diligence and love that affords the English-speaking reader a picture of the evolution of the poet's work."Dorothy M-T. Gregory, The Ionian University, Corfu In awarding Odysseus Elytis the 1979 Nobel Prize in literature, the Swedish Academy declared that he had been selected "for his poetry, which, against the background of Greek tradition, depicts with sensuous strength and intellectual clearsightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness." Elytis was largely unknown outside his native Greece before winning literature's highest honor, and much of his work has not been widely available in English. The Collected Poems is the first collection in any language, including Greek, of Elytis's complete poetry, a body of work marked by a profound love of hope, freedom, beauty, and Greek tradition. Twenty years in preparation, this volume includes his early poems, influenced in equal parts by surrealism and the landscape and climate of Greece and the Aegean Sea; his long, epic poem connecting Greece'sand his ownSecond World War experience to the myth of the eternal Greek hero

76. Alone From The Axion Esti - Odysseus Elytis
crowned myself, alone, The wheat I heralded I reaped alone! OdysseusElytis. Dedication I dedicate this poem to my BrotherIn-Arms
http://cremesti.com/La_Dolce_Vita/Odysseus_Alone.htm
from The March Toward The Front - Part C - The Axion Esti
Alone I governed my sorrow,
Alone I colonized the abandoned month of May
Alone I swelled the fragrances
On fields in halcyon days,
Fed yellow to the flowers, herded the hills,
Shot red into the wilderness!
I said: the stab wound will not be deeper than the wounded cry,
And I said: Injustice will not be more venerable than blood!
The hand of earthquakes, the hand of famines,
The hand of foes and kin Raged, destroyed, devastated, annihilated Once and twice and three times over Betrayed, I remained on the plain, alone, The message I raised I endured alone! Alone I discouraged death, Alone I bit into Time with teeth of stone, Alone I set off on the long journey Like the trumpet's call through the skies. Nemesis, stell and fraud were in my power, I could have marched on with a cloud of dust and armaments. I said: I'll compete with with only the sword of cold waters
