Thomas Stearns (TS) Eliot
was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on September 26, 1888. Eliot's poetry and critical works helped shape modern literature, and in 1948 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Eliot studied at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris, and at Oxford University. He settled in London in 1914. Eliot worked first as a teacher, then as a clerk for Lloyd's Bank, while writing poetry in his spare time. In 1917, with the encouragement of his friend and mentor, American poet Erza Pound , he published his first major poem, " The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock ." "Prufrock" revealed Eliot's early style, mixing humor and pessimism. " The Waste Land " (1922) expressed his horror at the spiritual turmoil of modern Europe. Eliot's " Ash-Wednesday " (1930) is more traditional, and with its religious emphasis, and more hopeful than his previous work. Eliot also wrote several plays including "Murder in the Cathedral," (1935), "The Family Reunion" (1939), "The Cocktail Party" (1950), "The Confidential Clerk" (1954), and "The Elder Statesman" (1958). In 1922 Eliot founded, and for seventeen years, edited the literary journal

Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table; Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells: Streets that follow like a tedious argument Of insidious intent To lead you to an overwhelming question ... Oh, do not ask, "What is it?"
Let us go and make our visit. In the room the women come and go Talking of Michelangelo.

    T. S. (Thomas Stearns) Eliot
    Biography
Thomas Stearns Eliot (September 26, 1888 - January 4, 1965), was an American poet, dramatist, and literary critic. Eliot was born into a prominent Saint Louis, Missouri family; the famous Chancellor of Washington University Tom Eliot was a 5th cousin. Eliot's major work shows few signs of St. Louis, but there was, in his youth, a Prufrock furniture store in town. But T.S. Eliot made his life and literary career in Great Britain, following the curtailment of a tour of Germany by the outbreak of World War I. After the War, in the 1920s, he would spend time with other great artists in the Montparnasse Quarter in Paris, France where he would be photographed by Man Ray. Through the influence of Ezra Pound he came to prominence with the publication of a poem, The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock , in 1915. His style was fresh and modernist, in stark contrast to much of the bucolic poetry of the time. In 1922, the publication of The Waste Land became one of the principal examples of the new wave of poetry of the time.

Modernism and Experimentation: Authors: T.S. Eliot (1888-1965)
Index Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a well- to-do family with roots in the northeastern United States. He received the best education of any major American writer of his generation at Harvard College, the Sorbonne, and Merton College of Oxford University. He studied Sanskrit and Oriental philosophy, which influenced his poetry. Like his friend Pound, he went to England early and became a towering figure in the literary world there. One of the most respected poets of his day, his modernist, seemingly illogical or abstract iconoclastic poetry had revolutionary impact. He also wrote influential essays and dramas, and championed the importance of literary and social traditions for the modern poet. As a critic, Eliot is best remembered for his formulation of the "objective correlative," which he described, in The Sacred Wood , as a means of expressing emotion through "a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events" that would be the "formula" of that particular emotion. Poems such as "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1915) embody this approach, when the ineffectual, elderly Prufrock thinks to himself that he has "measured out his life in coffee spoons," using coffee spoons to reflect a humdrum existence and a wasted lifetime.

Her er Eliot satirikeren som bl.a. ironiserer over moderne kjærlighet. Kritikerne var jevnt over negative og mente at Eliot ikke hadde noen oppfatning av det skjønne.
    Modernismens frontfigur
Året 1922 markerte et litterært gjennombrudd for modernismen. James Joyce ga ut romanen Ulysses mens T.S. Eliot ga ut det store diktet The Waste Land.
    For eliten
henvisninger til stor og kjent litteratur og Eliot selv utstyrte det med fotnoter.
