Elion Anfang des Jahres 1999 verstarb, war sie nicht nur Inhaberin von 45 chemisch-pharmakologischen Patenten, sondern auch Trägerin von 25 Ehrendoktoren sowie Mitinhaberin des Nobelpreises für Medizin und Physiologie. Diese Anerkennung erhielt sie im Jahre 1988 "für ihre Entdeckung der wichtigen Prinzipien für die Arzneimittelbehandlung" zusammen mit dem britischen Pharmakologen Sir James Whyte Black und dem US-amerikanischen Pharmakologen und Biochemiker George R. Hitchings. So studierte sie nach ihrer Schulausbildung im New Yorker Hunter College Analytische Chemie und schloss das Studium im Alter von 19 Jahren mit "summa cum laude" ab. Nach ihrer Promotion im Fach Chemie auf der New York University unterrichtete sie einige Jahre als Hochschullehrerin in Analytischer Chemie. 1944 begann sie ihre Tätigkeit in einem pharmazeutischen Unternehmen, wo sie mit Forschungsarbeiten im Bereich der DNA (Trägersubstanz der genetischen Information im Zellkern) den Grundstein ihrer zukünftigen Karriere legte. I Das von Elion 1952 entwickelte Medikament (Handelsname "Purinethol") wurde bereits ein Jahr später zur Bekämpfung der akuten und chronischen Leukämie erfolgreich eingesetzt. Das Jahr 1953 gilt daher als der Beginn des Einsatzes synthetischer Substanzen bei der Chemotherapie bestimmter Krebserkrankungen und Gertrude Elions Name ist seither untrennbar mit der Chemotherapie der Leukämie verbunden.
